In *Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)*, meet Dougal, an impossibly upbeat Brit who has just landed in New York City for the first time to attend the wedding of the father he’s never met. Audiences will also meet Robin, the sister of the bride and a no-nonsense New Yorker with a lot of errands to do for the bride — including picking up the groom’s estranged son from the airport.

These two strangers begin their journey together navigating not just New York City but also secrets and second chances. Entertainment Weekly raves that *Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)* is “going to be stuck in your head for days. Absolutely charming,” and Vulture said the musical "achieves something magical." A hit in London's West End and then in Boston, the show is now taking its title city by storm.

After Frazee fell into financial trouble, the theatre changed hands many times before being sold to Astor Theatre Incorporated, a Shubert Organization subsidiary, in 1919. The Shuberts continue to own the building. During the 1940s and 1950s, the building also served as a radio and television studio.

After eight years in the making, a 20-foot-tall, animatronic silverback gorilla — weighing more than 2,400 pounds — stomps his way to Broadway in “King Kong.” Based on the 1933 film of the same name, the musical features a book by Jack Thorne (“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”) and a score by Marius de Vries (“La La Land”) and Eddie Perfect.

For his latest blockbuster, filmmaker Carl Denham is on the search for the perfect leading lady. When he stumbles upon Ann Darrow on the streets of New York City, he hires her on the spot — and ships her off to Skull Island to begin production. Upon their arrival, Ann is abducted and taken by the monstrous Kong into a secluded spot on the island, where she is held hostage. Jack Driscoll, a member of the crew, journeys into the jungle to rescue Ann and — in doing so — captures Kong. The beast is taken back to New York City and subjected to public ridicule. But Ann has found a soft spot for the monster and sets out to save him.

Recommended for ages 8+. Children under 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
## What to watch for
In the musical version of “King Kong,” the story is told from the perspective of Ann. “In this version, she’s incredibly strong and compassionate and thoughtful,” says actor Christiani Pitts.

The onstage Kong is controlled by a group of 14 puppeteers and aerialists and 16 microprocessors.

While Kong’s major moves are preprogrammed, one of the offstage puppeteers can tweak them in real time so the monster interacts naturally with the set and the actors.

Kong’s arms are made of a high-pressure inflatable tube, which prevents the onstage actors from getting crushed and absorbs the impact when he pounds his fists into the ground.

Kong packs about 1,000 feet of electrical cable and 16 microprocessors.

King Kong on Broadway [10988] - TodayTix

Officially authorized by the estate of Merian C. Cooper (Creator of "King Kong" and director of the 1933 film), the musical adaptation is based on the novel of the original 1933 screenplay. It features a book by Jack Thorne - the Tony and Olivier Award-winning writer of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - a score by Marius de Vries - a Grammy Award winner whose previous credits include "La La Land," "Romeo + Juliet," and "Moulin Rouge!" - and songs by Australian Heplmann Award-winning performer Eddie Perfect.Following its monstrous, thrice-extended world premiere from May 28, 2013 through to February 16, 2014 at the Regent Theatre, in Melbourne, Austrailia, Kong once again returns to the streets of Manhattan, where the production officially opened at the Broadway Theatre on November 8, 2018.From the opening number, King Kong sets its intentions clear. It is a theatrical spectacle with stunning visuals, courtesy of the gigantic LED screen that merges seemlessly with parts of the set. Director Drew McOnie also sets the tone and pace with relentless choreography that accompanies and accentuates the action as we are introduced to our leading lady, Ann Darrow. She is a modern re-working and no longer the damsel-in-distress we have all grown accustomed to through previous iconic portrayals. She is feisty and fearless and longs to make her mark, belting out her first number "Queen of New York" as if part of a Destiny's Child concert.. And then, later in the show, we finally meet her co-star. Making his grand entrance, initially just the whites of his menacing teeth and eyes are visible in the darkness at the back of the stage, and when Kong strides into the light this six-metre tall, two-tonne, animatronic puppet is truly a great wonder of the world to behold. Operated by around a dozen, ninja-like puppeteers (known as The King's Company), Kong is a marvel of stagecraft and technology. Kudos to Global Creatures for raising the bar for technical possibilities in live theatre.Although King Kong is marketed on pure spectacle, there are also some touching moments on stage. Ann's connection to Kong is that of a woman who longs for her voice to be heard and a misunderstood creature who has no voice. Her "Full Moon Lullaby" is a beautiful musical moment that binds two characters together and in later scenes, as Kong sits exploited in chains in the concrete jungle, the emotion in his facial expressions and body language is so surprisingly palpable.King Kong and New York City go together like a horse and carriage and witnessing Kong run rampage through the streets of Manhattan and scale the Empire State Building in this epic musical is a sight theatre fans will surely never forget. (Photos by Joan Marcus / Matthew Murphy)

“West Side Story” meets “Jersey Boys” in this coming-of-age musical from director Robert De Niro about the power of family and love to cross cultural and social divides. Most kids don’t witness a murder outside their front door, but Calogero is not most kids. When Calogero is asked by the cops to identify the killer (the neighborhood’s resident “bad guy,” Sonny), he doesn’t turn in Sonny, and in turn, wins his undying devotion. As Calogero grows up, he begins spending more and more time around Sonny, who becomes like a father to him, but his own parents are wary of the gangster’s influence. Sonny has Calogero, or “C” as he calls him, run errands for him and hang out with his fellow gangsters, but when Calogero’s attention starts to turn to Jane, a black girl from his high school, the cultural and social divides in his life and his neighborhood come to a head.

Based on book writer Chazz Palminteri’s own story and inspired by the 1993 film of the same name, “A Bronx Tale” features music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater. The film’s director and star Robert De Niro co-directs with Jerry Zaks, and the show had its world premiere at Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey in 2016. “The New York Times” named the musical a “Critic’s Pick” and calls it “the musical-theater equivalent of...comfort food.”

Recommended for 12 + (Strong language; Gun shot effects). Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
## What to watch for
The musical is not the first time Chazz Palminteri’s story has been on Broadway. Palminteri wrote and performed a one-man show about his life in 1989, and that play inspired the film. The one-man show was on Broadway in 2007, directed by Jerry Zaks and starring Palminteri.

Robert De Niro and Jerry Zaks met on the 1996 movie “Marvin’s Room,” which starred De Niro and Meryl Streep. It was the first movie Zaks directed.

“A Bronx Tale” marks the second time Nick Cordero, who stars as Sonny, has played a role originated by Chazz Palminteri. (Palminteri played the role in the film.) Cordero also starred in the musical adaptation of Woody Allen’s “Bullets Over Broadway” as Cheech, the part Palminteri played in the film.

Palminteri originally planned to write the lyrics for the musical but hired Slater, who was the lyricist for “Sister Act” and “School of Rock,” when Palminteri heard one of Slater’s songs.

Costume designer William Ivey Long worked very closely with Robert De Niro to get the look exactly right. De Niro was particularly involved in getting the exact right shirt collar look, and he drew a sketch for Long which helped create the final product onstage.

A Bronx Tale [2561] - TodayTix

A Bronx Tale has been told in various forms since the 1980s. It began life as a one-man play in Los Angeles, written and performed by Chazz Palminteri, before it transferred and made its off-Broadway debut in 1989. A film adaptation, starring Academy Award winner Robert De Niro (with Palminteri now starring as Sonny) was released in 1993, which also marked De Niro's directorial debut. In October 2007, Palminteri would reprise his performance in the one-man play on the Great White Way at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre until finally - after an out-of-town-tryout at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey in February 2016 - the story would return to Broadway as a musical adaptation. A Bronx Tale - The Musical would officially open at the Longacre Theatre on December 1, 2016. The show features a book by Palminteri himself and also marks the Broadway directorial debut for Robert De Niro, who co-directs the musical alongside Broadway veteran Jerry Zaks.(Photos by Joan Marcus)
