Sam Shepard is a master chronicler of American families, specifically those of lower economic classes. His 1977 play *Curse of the Starving Class* is popularly known to be a part of his Family Trilogy, which also features *True West* and *Buried Child*. Like those other famous plays, *Curse of the Starving Class* is gritty, uncompromising, and fueled by drama from three-dimensional characters.

The play may seem straightforward enough given the archetypes within it: an alcoholic father, burnt out mother, revolting daughter, and optimistic son. However, what makes Shepard so special is how specific he makes his characters even within their tropes as he cracks open the nuances of the American nuclear family. *Curse of the Starving Class* is particularly resonant today given its look at housing insecurity and financial instability. Almost 50 years after its debut, American families continue to cope with similar anxieties, which can lead its members down treacherous paths.

What to watch for
- The New Group is known for having recognizable talent on stage, as with Parker Posey and Marisa Tomei in recent productions.
- The play will be housed within Signature Theatre, another off-Broadway venue, on 42nd Street. Check out the sprawling lobby, play library, and cafe before the show.
- Cooper Hoffman is the son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman and is following in his father’s footsteps as an actor of stage and screen.
- A 1994 film adaptation of the play starred James Woods, Kathy Bates, Henry Thomas, and Randy Quaid.

Sam Shepard’s dark comedy follows the Tates as creditors swoop in to take the family home. An Obie-winning family drama with biting laughs, *Curse of the Starving Class* looks at a single American family in the face of financial and existential dread.

Get *Curse of the Starving Class* tickets and see Sam Shepard’s Obie Award winner return to New York in a fierce new production. *Curse of the Starving Class* plays at The New Group for a limited time with performances beginning in February. A biting look at the American dream, this 1977 play continues to resonate as families grapple with housing and economic insecurity. *Curse of the Starving Class* tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide now.

Experience *Curse of the Starving Class* off Broadway and see a powerhouse cast lead this revived comedy. Calista Flockhart (Golden Globe Award winner, three-time Emmy Award nominee for *Ally McBeal*), Cooper Hoffman (Golden Globe Award nominee for *Licorice Pizza*), and Christian Slater (Golden Globe Award winner for *Mr. Robot*) co-star in this play about family, legacy, and flattened dreams.

Considered to be a part of Shepard’s Family Trilogy, which also features *True West* and *Buried Child, Curse of the Starving Class* blends dark comedy and cutting satire in its look at a family fighting to stay alive. Combining a drunken father, overworked mother, rebellious daughter, and idealistic son, the play is an examination of prototypical families while still granting each character plenty of specificity — and goals to fight for.

Now, a fresh production comes to The New Group, directed by the theatre’s artistic director Scott Elliott. Performing at The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theater within The Pershing Square Signature Center on 42nd Street, this play, like all of Shepard’s, promises an electrifying, dramatic, and gritty story.

Told through a contemporary lens, Elliott’s staging offers a story for modern audiences. Almost half a century after the play’s premiere, *Curse of the Starving Class*’s themes of rich-poor dynamics continue to pervade politics and American identity. Tickets to *Curse of the Starving Class* in New York are available now.
