King James Poster (1)

Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph's King James comes to New York after premiering at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Abbott Elementary's Chris Perfetti and Steppenwolf artistic director Glenn Davis star. Get King James tickets now.

The *King James* play begins in 2004, the rookie season of LeBron James — and the year when two Cleveland men, Matt and Shawn, meet to negotiate a sale for Cavaliers season tickets. That meeting reveals their shared interest in basketball, which allows the men to form a deep bond. But their differing views on the career of their NBA idol also exposes rifts in their relationship, as they grow apart and grow back together over the course of 12 years.

The play is divided into four scenes (a nod to the four quarters of basketball games) that correlate with key moments in James's career: his rookie season, the year he left the Cavaliers for Miami, the year he returned, and the year James led the Cavaliers to their first NBA championship.

*King James* off Broadway follows its world premiere a little closer to Cleveland. The Steppenwolf production went up in spring 2022, also starring Davis and Perfetti. The show received widespread acclaim, with the Chicago Tribune calling *King James* "a moving, accessible and openhearted story."

Joseph was last represented off Broadway in 2021 with *Letters of Suresh*. He's also known for Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, which was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and *Animals Out of Paper*.

Davis just appeared off Broadway in another Steppenwolf transfer, *Downstate*, in fall 2022. He previously appeared in Joseph's *Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo* on Broadway, opposite Robin Williams, and in TV shows including *The Good Wife* and *Billions*. He's also the first artistic director of color in Steppenwolf history.

Perfetti is currently known for his role as Jacob Hill on the Emmy-winning TV sitcom *Abbott Elementary*. He's also a stage veteran, having appeared in Off-Broadway shows including *The Low Road*, *Everybody*, and *The Tempest*. He last appeared off Broadway in 2019's *Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow*, and has also acted in two Broadway shows: *Picnic* and *Six Degrees of Separation*.

Directing is Kenny Leon, who just directed two Broadway shows in fall 2022: *Ohio State Murders* and *Topdog/Underdog*.

King James Tickets | The Official New York Theatre Guide

See Abbott Elementary's Chris Perfetti and Glenn Davis take the court — that is, the stage — in this new play by Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph. Two men develop a friendship over their shared idol, LeBron James, and as the NBA star's career progresses, the men's bond changes, breaks, and returns again. Learn more about tickets to this slam-dunk hit, coming off Broadway following an acclaimed Chicago premiere.

Perfetti and Davis first led *King James* in 2022 at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where Davis is co-artistic director, and then in Los Angeles, where LeBron James currently plays with the Lakers.

Davis last appeared off Broadway in the 2022 New York premiere of *Downstate*, another Steppenwolf transfer. Perfetti last performed off Broadway in *Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow* in 2019. He also performed in numerous other Broadway and Off-Broadway plays before landing the role of Jacob Hill on the Emmy-winning sitcom *Abbott Elementary*.

Joseph is best known for his Pulitzer-nominated play *Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo*, and his other works include *Animals Out of Paper*, *Gruesome Playground Injuries*, and *Letters of Suresh*, which premiered off Broadway in 2021.

## What to Watch For

- *King James* is split into four scenes, mimicking the four quarters of a basketball game.
- Each scene takes place in a significant year in James's basketball career. His rookie season was in 2004, he left the Cavaliers for the Miami Heat in 2010, he returned to Cleveland in 2014, and the Cavaliers won their first NBA championship in 2016.
- Joseph wrote the role of Shawn specifically for Davis. The two previously worked together on *Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo*, and the play was inspired by their own conversations about basketball.
- Like their characters, Davis and Perfetti are wildly different when it comes to basketball affiliations. Davis used to be a basketball player in high school (he gave it up to pursue acting) and is a longtime Bulls fan. Perfetti only started following the sport in 2021.
- A live DJ, Khloe Janel, spun tunes pre-show and at intermission of the Chicago production. They reprise their role off Broadway.
- Joseph has a personal connection to his play — like the men in *King James*, the playwright hails from Cleveland.
- The player lives up to his title! *King James* is now especially timely — in February 2023, James set a new record as the NBA's highest-scoring player of all time.

New York City Center

Architect Harry P. Knowles designed New York City Center, which was built by Clinton and Russell in 1923 for the Shriners under the name of The Mecca Temple. Amid the financial crash of 1929, the building became city property after the Shriners were unable to keep up with tax payments.

Former Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and New York City Council President Newbold Morris decided to convert the temple into Manhattan’s first performing arts center. The building opened as a theatre in December 1943.

New York City Center is known for its annual Encores! productions since 1994, which restage seldom revived American musicals in concert or semi-staged incarnations. The venue received a Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre in 2000.

Since its launch, New York City Center has become one of the city’s prime venues for dance.

In addition to the 2,557-seat mainstage, the facility houses two smaller theatres — Stage I and Stage II, where Manhattan Theatre Club has hosted its Off-Broadway productions since 1984 — and four studios.
