[Poster] A Bronx Tale 2561

“West Side Story” meets “Jersey Boys” in this coming-of-age musical from director Robert De Niro about the power of family and love to cross cultural and social divides. Most kids don’t witness a murder outside their front door, but Calogero is not most kids. When Calogero is asked by the cops to identify the killer (the neighborhood’s resident “bad guy,” Sonny), he doesn’t turn in Sonny, and in turn, wins his undying devotion. As Calogero grows up, he begins spending more and more time around Sonny, who becomes like a father to him, but his own parents are wary of the gangster’s influence. Sonny has Calogero, or “C” as he calls him, run errands for him and hang out with his fellow gangsters, but when Calogero’s attention starts to turn to Jane, a black girl from his high school, the cultural and social divides in his life and his neighborhood come to a head.

Based on book writer Chazz Palminteri’s own story and inspired by the 1993 film of the same name, “A Bronx Tale” features music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater. The film’s director and star Robert De Niro co-directs with Jerry Zaks, and the show had its world premiere at Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey in 2016. “The New York Times” named the musical a “Critic’s Pick” and calls it “the musical-theater equivalent of...comfort food.”

Recommended for 12 + (Strong language; Gun shot effects). Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
## What to watch for
The musical is not the first time Chazz Palminteri’s story has been on Broadway. Palminteri wrote and performed a one-man show about his life in 1989, and that play inspired the film. The one-man show was on Broadway in 2007, directed by Jerry Zaks and starring Palminteri.

Robert De Niro and Jerry Zaks met on the 1996 movie “Marvin’s Room,” which starred De Niro and Meryl Streep. It was the first movie Zaks directed.

“A Bronx Tale” marks the second time Nick Cordero, who stars as Sonny, has played a role originated by Chazz Palminteri. (Palminteri played the role in the film.) Cordero also starred in the musical adaptation of Woody Allen’s “Bullets Over Broadway” as Cheech, the part Palminteri played in the film.

Palminteri originally planned to write the lyrics for the musical but hired Slater, who was the lyricist for “Sister Act” and “School of Rock,” when Palminteri heard one of Slater’s songs.

Costume designer William Ivey Long worked very closely with Robert De Niro to get the look exactly right. De Niro was particularly involved in getting the exact right shirt collar look, and he drew a sketch for Long which helped create the final product onstage.

A Bronx Tale [2561] - TodayTix

A Bronx Tale has been told in various forms since the 1980s. It began life as a one-man play in Los Angeles, written and performed by Chazz Palminteri, before it transferred and made its off-Broadway debut in 1989. A film adaptation, starring Academy Award winner Robert De Niro (with Palminteri now starring as Sonny) was released in 1993, which also marked De Niro's directorial debut. In October 2007, Palminteri would reprise his performance in the one-man play on the Great White Way at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre until finally - after an out-of-town-tryout at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey in February 2016 - the story would return to Broadway as a musical adaptation. A Bronx Tale - The Musical would officially open at the Longacre Theatre on December 1, 2016. The show features a book by Palminteri himself and also marks the Broadway directorial debut for Robert De Niro, who co-directs the musical alongside Broadway veteran Jerry Zaks.(Photos by Joan Marcus)

The Longacre Theatre was designed by Henry Beaumont Herts and named after Longacre Square (now Times Square). The theatre was built by producer/manager H.H. Frazee — best known as the Boston Red Sox owner who sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees — and officially opened on May 1, 1913 with the William Hurlbut-Frances Whitehouse comedy *Are You a Crook?*

After Frazee fell into financial trouble, the theatre changed hands many times before being sold to Astor Theatre Incorporated, a Shubert Organization subsidiary, in 1919. The Shuberts continue to own the building. During the 1940s and 1950s, the building also served as a radio and television studio.

Company Tony Wrap

We’ll be so glad to see you — but only through July 31! Marianne Elliott’s gender-bending revival of Stephen Sondheim’s musical is only on Broadway for a few more weeks, so catch it now that it's become the most awarded musical of the 2021-22 season with five Tonys. *Company* tickets are available on TodayTix. Get tickets for *Company* in New York today.

This *Company* revival features a woman in the central role of Bobbie, a 35-year-old singleton whose coupled friends want to pair her off on the occasion of her 35th birthday. Although *Company* is a quintessential New York musical, this production originated in London’s West End, featuring Patti LuPone in an Olivier Award-winning performance. Patti LuPone returns to her role as Joanne, who sings the epic 11 o’clock number “The Ladies Who Lunch,” in the Broadway production.

[__Jennifer Simard on the vulnerable experience of playing Sarah in ‘Company’ on Broadway__](https://www.todaytix.com/insider/nyc/posts/jennifer-simard-on-the-vulnerable-experience-of-playing-sarah-in-company-on-broadway)

[__The biggest changes made to 'Company' for the Broadway revival
__](https://www.todaytix.com/insider/nyc/posts/the-biggest-changes-to-the-broadway-revival-of-company)

In the *Company* musical, Bobbie explores a series of relationships with three suitors, while her friends continually encourage her to settle down. While the plot remains entirely the same with the lead’s gender switch, many critics and reporters have commented that by placing a woman in the center of the story and setting it in modern times, the urgency increases as biological clocks and societal pressure don’t hold the same weight for men.

*Company* originally premiered on Broadway in 1970, and the musical features several Sondheim standards including “Being Alive,” “Someone Is Waiting,” “Marry Me a Little,” and “Another Hundred People.” Actors including Adrian Lester, Raúl Esparza, Neil Patrick Harris, and more have played Bobby, and Rosalie Craig originated the female version of the role in London. *Company* Broadway tickets are available now.

## What to Watch For

- When Stephen Sondheim saw this production of Company in London, he told Rosalie Craig, who played Bobbie in the West End, “I wish I’d written it for a woman from the start.”
- This production of *Company* in New York marks the third Broadway revival of the show. The show was revived in 2006 and in 1995. The 2006 production won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.
- In 2011, The New York Philharmonic staged *Company* in a production starring Neil Patrick Harris, Stephen Colbert, Christina Hendricks, Martha Plimpton, and Patti LuPone as Joanne. The three-night run of performances was filmed and given a theatrical release and now is available to rent and stream.
- The *Documentary Now!* episode “Co-op” is a parody of the documentary about the making of the *Company* original cast recording. John Mulaney plays a Sondheim-esque character, while Paula Pell’s song “I’ve Got to Go” is an homage to Elaine Stritch and “The Ladies Who Lunch.” The episode is available to stream on Netflix, and the real documentary is available to stream on the Criterion Channel.
- Director Marianne Elliott and designer Bunny Christie were inspired by *Alice in Wonderland* for the production, and there are many visual cues to the iconic tale of a young woman finding herself in this *Company*.

Company returns to the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Broadway. Book Company tickets in New York now.Following an acclaimed run at the Gielgud Theatre in London's West End under the helm of two-time Tony Award-winning director Marianne Elliott, this production of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's much-loved musical Company transfers to New York City. This new revival, which took home four out of its nine Olivier Award nominations in 2019 (including 'Best Musical Revival'), made headlines as the first gender-reversed production of Company to have been officially licensed by Stephen Sondheim. The leading male role of Bobby was changed to a leading female role named Bobbie, offering a fresh, new perspective on singledom, love and marriage. A handful of supporting characters were also gender-switched for the revival, including the inclusion of a gay couple by turning the role of Amy into Jamie. The revival also made waves over the pond due to the fact that Broadway legend and two-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone would finally return to a West End musical for the first time since 1993's Sunset Boulevard, ultimately winning an Olivier Award for her efforts. She reprised the role of Joanne (from the popular 2011 New York Philharmonic Concert) and she now reprises the role one more time for Broadway audiences at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.Joining Ms. LuPone is Katrina Lenk as leading lady Bobbie. Having wowed critics and audiences alike during the 2017 Broadway premiere of Paula Vogel's Indecent and scooping the Tony Award in 2018 for her stunning performance as Dina in The Band's Visit, Ms. Lenk is a shooting star of the New York stage and this gift of a monumental, gender-switched role is certainly in safe hands.Company began previews on Mar. 2, 2020, but was forced to close after nine performances. Company will now resume performances from Nov. 15, 2021, with an opening night on Dec. 9, 2021.Originally premiering on Broadway in 1970, winning six Tony Awards (including 'Best Musical'), this production of Company marks its fourth Broadway revival and perhaps the Sondheim classic has never felt more modern.Company is finally back where it belongs... on the Broadway stage! And we'll definitely drink to that!(Photo by Brinkhoff/Moegenburg)
