Todrick Hall has been working on this new musical for years and, as he told [People Magazine](https://people.com/todrick-hall-original-musical-midnight-heads-to-new-york-exclusive-12001238?utm_source=sniply&utm_campaign=sniply&utm_medium=sniply), "The writing process starts long before you put pen to paper. I started thinking about the characters and sitting with them. I decided I didn't just want to make a musical. I wanted to make a movement."

That movement is one fueled by empathy and understanding of everyone's life experiences, which are themes in this original new musical. Hall appears in it alongside a cast of 11 singers and performers, and the show tackles timely themes despite the story taking place over a century ago. As the country changes, what world have these characters inherited? How will they navigate a new world? And how will they treat others, including those different from them, as they move onward?

*Midnight* explores these rich questions with nuance and verve — all set to a throbbing score that audiences will adore.

## What to watch for
- Todrick Hall is also directing this new musical.
- In addition to Hall, the cast includes Jeremy Beloate, Jimmy Brewer, Kennedy Caughell, Dwayne Clark, Sidney DuPont, Ayana George, Autumn Hurlbert, Kolbi Jordan, Sarah Lynn Marion, Ciaran McCarthy, and Charlotte Odusanya.
- The Daryl Roth Theatre has been home to other inventive musicals, including Titanique.
-Hall won a 2019 MTV Video Music Award for collaboration on Taylor Swift's "You Need to Calm Down," winning as an executive producer.

Get *Midnight* tickets on New York Theatre Guide to experience Todrick Hall's stunning and original new musical, making its premiere off Broadway for a limited run this fall. The American Idol alum stars in this show that he also wrote and is directing. *Midnight* the musical follows twelve Americans — six Black, six white — as they move through an evolving American South during the 19th century.

Don't miss *Midnight* off Broadway and see Todrick appear in a show that blends gospel, rhythm and blues, pop, rock, folk, opera, and musical theatre. Audiences can expect a dazzling score sung by a dozen talented performers who play complex roles and share a story that, though set over a century ago, deeply resonates today. Themes of persistence, empathy, race, and class shine through in this shimmering musical about the power, and music, of the human heart.

*Midnight* in New York City represents a major career step for Hall, who is no stranger to Broadway after appearing in *Memphis* and *The Color Purple*. Now, he steps into a creative role, debuting the musical he has been workshopping for years. “Keep going, Little Toddy,” Hall told [People Magazine](https://people.com/todrick-hall-original-musical-midnight-heads-to-new-york-exclusive-12001238?utm_source=sniply&utm_campaign=sniply&utm_medium=sniply), discussing his life as a Black queer boy growing up in Texas. “People aren't going to understand you. You're going to spend a lot of time looking in the mirror and crying and wishing you could change so many things about yourself. But those scars are going to end up being your superpowers, and you're going to be able to change the world. One gay musical at a time.”

In addition to Hall, the cast includes Jeremy Beloate, Jimmy Brewer, Kennedy Caughell, Dwayne Clark, Sidney DuPont, Ayana George, Autumn Hurlbert, Kolbi Jordan, Sarah Lynn Marion, Ciaran McCarthy, and Charlotte Odusanya.

*Midnight* tickets are now available on New York Theatre Guide.

It’s a comedy about a musical: get *Smash* tickets and see the Tony Award-nominated stage adaptation of the hit TV series come to life on Broadway. A fan favorite and cult classic, *Smash* on NBC ran for only two seasons but had a lasting impact on viewers. Catapulting Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty to fame, the show burned bright, and burned fast, but cemented its legacy with infectious music and behind-the-scenes drama. Now, it comes to Broadway in a thrilling production based on the story and characters of the beloved Emmy Award-winning and Grammy Award-nominated musical series.

*Smash* on Broadway features an all-star team: Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson has joined the producing team after winning a Tony Award for also producing Pulitzer Prize winner *A Strange Loop*, and musical theatre writing icons Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (*Hairspray*, Tony Award) wrote the score. Rick Elice and Bob Martin (*The Drowsy Chaperone*, Tony Award) wrote the book, and Susan Stroman (*The Producers*, Tony Award) directs this production. Joshua Bergasse, who won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography for the television series, returns to Smash to choreograph the Broadway version.

As with the series, *Smash* follows the process of bringing *Bombshell*, a musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe, to Broadway. Features many of the songs written for the show including "Let Me Be Your Star," *Smash* will give fans of the show everything they’ve been looking for since the series left the air.

There’s rivaling Marilyn actresses, plenty of backstage drama, lots of dishy gossip and sharp, dark comedy to go around. When bringing a smash to Broadway, what could go wrong? Be a part of the sensation: tickets to *Smash* are available now on New York Theatre Guide.

Smash on Broadway - NYC - New York Theatre Guide

Smash Broadway Tickets | The Official NY Theatre Guide

Let me be your star: experience the Tony Award-nominated *Smash* the musical on Broadway. *Smash* in New York opens spring 2025 and is based on the cult TV show.

*Smash* was a TV phenomenon, running for only two seasons but leaving an indelible mark on fans. Winning an Emmy Award and enjoying Grammy and Golden Globe award nominations, the series catapulted Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee to fame and also featured a slew of Broadway regulars, including Jeremy Jordan and Christian Borle.

Now, the show comes to Broadway, which feels particularly apt given the series was about a show…coming to Broadway. That show-within-a-show is called *Bombshell* and is based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Actresses compete for starring roles, and soon the behind-the-scenes drama eclipses anything going on on stage. What could go wrong? Susan Stroman brings her signature razzle dazzle staging to this big musical, which features a number of hit songs from the series along with a delicious new score. Buckle up for a ferocious and fun ride as Bombshell, and *Smash*, make their long-awaited journey to Broadway.

## What to watch for

- The Grammy-nominated “Let Me Be Your Star” is just one of the many hit songs from the series that will be heard in the stage musical, which also features new songs.
- Audiences can expect familiar characters and plot points with some new ones thrown in that further flesh out the steamy relationships and cut-throat world of *Smash*.
- Movies are often adapted for the stage, but TV shows are less common additions. However, this season, *[BOOP! The Betty Boop Musical](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/39187-boop-the-betty-boop-musical)* based on the cartoon character will also be on Broadway.
- Megan Hilty, who originated the role of Ivy Lynn on TV, will also be on Broadway this year with *[Death Becomes Her](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/34895-death-becomes-her-on-broadway)*.
