This is Paddington as you’ve never seen him before, brought to life by a team celebrating all of the magic and wonder of live theatre.”

*Paddington the Musical* has a talented cast that includes Timi Akinyosade, Amy Booth-Steel, Tarinn Callender, Delilah Bennett-Cardy, Adrian Der Gregorian, Tom Edden, Brenda Edwards, Amy Ellen Richardson, Victoria Hamilton-Barritt, Teddy Kempner, Bonnie Langford, Joseph Bramley, Leo Collon, Stevie Hare, and Jasper Rowse.

The first of three Paddington films from StudioCanal was released in 2014, and it earned a British Academy Children's Award for Feature Film.

## What to watch for

- This musical is the second stage adaptation of Paddington. The first was a 1983 musical by Shirlie Roden called *Paddington Bear’s Magical Musical*.
- In 2019, lighting designer Neil Austin earned a Tony Award for *Ink*.
- In 1994, the first item to pass through the newly completed Channel Tunnel was a Paddington toy, which the British tunnelers chose to pass through to their French counterparts.
- Costume designer Gabriella Slade has previously been the costume designer for the Spice Girls international tour.

Directed by Luke Sheppard (*& Juliet, Starlight Express*), with a book by Olivier Award-winning writer Jessica Swale, the world premiere production of *Paddington The Musical* is a love letter to London, with innovative sets and video projections transforming the Savoy Theatre as Paddington searches for a new home. When the Browns realise that their favourite bear is “One of Us” – a song featured in the acclaimed score by Tom Fletcher – they set off on a rescue mission to save the newest member of their family from a vengeful villain. The show’s message, celebrating acceptance and kindness, is one Paddington’s Aunt Lucy would surely approve of.

## What to watch for

- This musical is the second stage adaptation of *Paddington*. The first was a 1983 show called *Paddington Bear’s Magical Musical*, created by Shirlie Roden.
- Audiences have been moved to tears by the way Paddington has been brought to life for the musical: a magical mix of an onstage performer wearing the costume, and an offstage vocal performer, who also remotely controls Paddington’s facial animation.
- McFly star Tom Fletcher has said the score features some of his favourite songs he’s ever written, including “The Explorer and the Bear” and “Marmalade.”
- Author Michael Bond based Paddington on a teddy bear he bought as a gift for his wife which had been left alone on a shelf in a London shop.
- In the first *Paddington* film, Michael Bond had a cameo as a kindly gentleman sitting in a restaurant waving to Paddington as he rode by in a taxi.

The Savoy Theatre opened on 21 Oct. 1929. The building was known for being the first public building to be lit entirely by electricity.

When a fire ravaged the theatre in 1990, destroying the interior, it was meticulously restored by Sir William Whitfield to the original 1929 designs. The theatre reopened on 19 Jul. 1993.

The D’Oyly Carte Opera Company played several seasons at the theatre over the past 20 years, their last production being *HMS Pinafore* in 2003.

The theatre has also housed several musicals, including *She Loves Me* in 1994 starring John Gordon Sinclair and Ruthie Henshall, and has played host to musicals exclusively since 2006.

## Savoy Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels - Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle.

In the Stalls, the legroom throughout is very good, and the seating is well raked to ensure good views.

In the Dress Circle, the overhang of the Grand Circle affects the view from Row K onwards. The amount of legroom also decreases the further back you sit.

The Grand Circle feels rather far from the stage.
