Joshua Harmon has had a prolific career, writing numerous acclaimed shows that often focus on family, identity, and contemporary politics. He first made a splash with the hilarious Bad Jews, and his new play, *We Had a World*, offers a similar cantankerous and funny sensibility. A Tony Award nominee for Prayer* for the French Republic*, Harmon has also written *Skintight, Significant Other*, and *The Bedwetter*.

In many of his plays, his characters unleash emotional and strained yet hysterical screeds. He is known for his powerful monologues, intricate characters, and modern plots. A rumination on family, this new play may be one of his most personal yet and promises audiences a unique window into one family’s story.

In *We Had a World*, Harmon collaborates alongside another new play aficionado, Trip Cullman, to tell the story of a grandmother’s dying wish: her grandson to write a play about their family, “but I want you to promise me something,” she says. “Make it as bitter and vitriolic as possible.”

## What to watch for
- Joshua Harmon returns to Manhattan Theatre Club with this new play; previously, the theater staged his Tony-nominated *Prayer for the French Republic*.
- Manhattan Theatre Club is known for their intellectual plays that go on to win major awards, as with *Doubt* and *Proof*, which both won Pulitzer Prizes.
- Joanna Gleason is a theatre icon, having originated the role of The Baker’s Wife in *Into the Woods* and also appearing in *Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, It’s Only a Play*, and more.
- Trip Cullman has previously worked on many other new off-Broadway plays and musicals, including *Yen, Unknown Soldier*, and *The Pain of My Belligerence*.

Tony nominee Joshua Harmon’s *We Had a World* is an uproarious and deeply felt comedy about an eager playwright, his dying grandmother, and her final wish to see a play about their family — as long as it’s as biting and vicious as possible.

Get *We Had a World* tickets and see the newest play from Tony Award nominee Joshua Harmon, the acclaimed author of *Bad Jews, Admissions*, and *Prayer for the French Republic*. *We Had a World* plays at Manhattan Theatre Club in a world premiere production starring Joanna Gleason (Tony Award winner for *Into the Woods*) and Drama Desk nominee Jeanine Serralles (*Gloria*). Obie Award winner Trip Cullman (*Choir Boy, Unknown Soldier*) directs this limited run off Broadway at New York City Center Stage II.

How crazy is your family? Experience the uproarious comedy *We Had a World* off Broadway to find out if it compares to the one on stage. In Harmon’s new play, a dying grandmother calls her grandson with a request: write a play about their family. Sounds sweet enough, but there’s a caveat: “But I want you to promise me something,” she says. “Make it as bitter and vitriolic as possible.”

A scathing but deeply personal play unfolds in which no one is left off the hook. In the process, three decades of family feuds, enormous cruelty, and persisting love take the writer to the page, only for that same behavior to be reflected back on the stage.

Stage and screen actors Gleason (*Heartburn, Hannah and Her Sisters*) and Serralles (*Verite, Stunning*) star in this bracing new play from a writer known for his explosive monologues and family drama. A clever playwright with eviscerating characters, Harmon is the prized author of *Significant Other, Skintight*, and other works that have made him a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow, Drama Desk Award winner, and Lortel nominee. See his newest play and prepare to meet a family like no other.

In Tony nominee Joshua Harmon’s newest play *We Had a World* starring Tony winner Joanna Gleason, a dying woman calls her grandson asking him to write a play about their family…but only if it’s as caustic, searing, and vitriolic as possible. Cue biting laughs and fierce comedy in this relentless new play.

Andrew Barth Feldman, a 2018 winner of the Jimmy Awards for high school theatre performers, made his Broadway debut in 2019 in the title role of *Dear Evan Hansen*. Architect Harry P. Knowles designed New York City Center, which was built by Clinton and Russell in 1923 for the Shriners under the name of The Mecca Temple. Amid the financial crash of 1929, the building became city property after the Shriners were unable to keep up with tax payments.

Former Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and New York City Council President Newbold Morris decided to convert the temple into Manhattan’s first performing arts center. The building opened as a theatre in December 1943.

New York City Center is known for its annual Encores! productions since 1994, which restage seldom revived American musicals in concert or semi-staged incarnations. The venue received a Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre in 2000.

Since its launch, New York City Center has become one of the city’s prime venues for dance.

In addition to the 2,557-seat mainstage, the facility houses two smaller theatres — Stage I and Stage II, where Manhattan Theatre Club has hosted its Off-Broadway productions since 1984 — and four studios.

The day you see *Dear Evan Hansen* on Broadway is going to be a good day, and here's why. Oscar-winning songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul penned the Tony-winning score for the musical alongside playwright Steven Levenson, who also won a Tony for the show’s book. Not to mention that the show won Best Musical in 2017. But you can only see this show on Broadway through September 18, so get *Dear Evan Hansen* tickets now.

In the *Dear Evan Hansen* musical, the title character is having a hard time. He broke his arm over the summer and is nervous for his first day of senior year. To confront his anxiousness, his therapist asks him to write a letter to himself as an exercise. So he writes, “Dear Evan Hansen, today is going to be a good day, and here’s why.”

At school, he runs into his crush, Zoe Murphy, and fumbles over the conversation. Then her loner brother Connor takes a surprising turn and signs Evan’s cast. But while Evan prints out his letter assignment in the computer lab, Connor steals the letter and runs off. The next day, Evan goes to the principal’s office where the Murphys reveal that Connor killed himself, mistake Evan’s letter for Connor’s suicide note, and assume Evan was his friend.

As Evan slowly lets the family believe the lie, he finds comfort in their home life, so unlike his own where his single working mother Heidi is struggling to get by. But as soon as the lie becomes bigger and bigger, Evan must figure out how to confront his reality and find a way to connect beyond the falsehood.

Michael Greif, director of Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway shows like *Rent* and *Next to Normal*, helms the show, which The New York Times calls “a gorgeous heartbreaker of a musical.” “The musical is ideal for families looking for something yeastier and more complex than the usual sugary diversions,” The Times raved. “But then it should also appeal to just about anyone who has ever felt, at some point in life, that he or she was trapped ‘on the outside looking in,’ as one lyric has it. Which is just about everybody with a beating heart.”

## What to Watch For
- *Dear Evan Hansen* composer and lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul based the premise for the musical on a real-life incident from Pasek’s high school.
- The *Dear Evan Hansen* musical had its world premiere in Washington D.C. at Arena Stage and premiered off Broadway at Second Stage Theater before moving to the Music Box Theatre on Broadway.
- Pasek, Paul, and Levenson wrote the role of Evan Hansen for Ben Platt, who went on to win a Tony Award for Best Actor for his performance as Evan. Platt is no longer playing Evan on Broadway, but he reprised the role in the 2021 film adaptation of the musical.
- The Act 1 finale “You Will Be Found” was not initially part of the show. The song, which has become a kind of anthem and central message for the musical, was written for *Dear Evan Hansen* on Broadway. The original Act 1 finale was called “A Part Of Me.”
- The Act 1 finale incorporates videos from real fans holding up signs that say “You Will Be Found.” When the show premiered in New York, the producers solicited videos on YouTube from fans, and the footage is part of the projections during the song.

Dear Evan Hansen is at the Music Box Theatre from December 11. Dear Evan Hansen tickets are on sale now. After a world premiere production at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 2015 and an off-Broadway premiere with Second Stage Theater in the spring of 2016, the Dear Evan Hansen musical would be found and greenlit for a Broadway transfer. Officially opening at the Music Box Theatre on December 4, 2016, following previews from November 14, the musical soon became the most hyped and talked-about hit of the season. The show is both a critical and commercial megahit that has blossomed thanks to an unyielding fan base and social media presence. With the small cast of eight constantly engulfed on stage by Peter Nigrini's projections from various social media outlets, the idea is so cleverly staged: Despite the endless opportunities for interconnectivity in a virtual world, we are frequently left alone and isolated as human beings in the real world. The central character of Evan Hansen embodies this as an instantly recognisable outsider at high school, but the musical's appeal breaks into other demographics through the portrayal of Evan's mother, Heidi, and Connor's parents, Cynthia and Larry Murphy. Whether they are a single parent or desperately struggling in a relationship, their sense of loneliness is equally palpable. The themes of loss, regret, and trying to find our place in the world are so universal that teenagers, adults and seniors alike will have no choice but to relate. With a non-traditional, Tony Award-winning score from the young and talented duo of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (the Oscar winners behind the movie musicals La La Land and The Greatest Showman), the musical's soundtrack has broken out of the Broadway bubble and has ranked in the Top 10 of the Billboard charts. It features hits such as "Waving Through a Window," "Requiem," and "You Will Be Found," and each number has its own unique feel as if written by the individual characters themselves as singer-songwriters. The score alone sets Dear Evan Hansen apart as a marvel of modern musical theatre and offers a perfect opportunity to break in a friend who may be completely new to the world of Broadway and seeks a change from jazz hands and tap shoes.Dear Evan Hansen made a bona fide star out of original cast member Ben Platt, who deservedly picked up the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his efforts, and we are sure that many leading, young men will be found and will rise to the occasion in the years to come.Dear Evan Hansen currently stars Jordan Fisher as Evan Hansen. Cast members who appeared in the production when the show closed in March 2020 include Gabrielle Carrubba (as Zoe Murphy), Jessica Phillips (as Heidi Hansen), David Jeffrey (as Connor Murphy), Christiane Noll (as Cynthia Murphy), Ivan Hernandez (as Larry Murphy), Jared Goldsmith (as Jared Kleinman), and Phoebe Koyabe (as Alana Beck).Photos by Matthew Murphy

Music Box Theatre

The Music Box Theatre was built in 1921 by theatrical producer Sam H. Harris to house Irving Berlin's musical revue *The Music Box*, written specifically for the venue. The first play to go up at the venue was 1925's *Cradle Snatchers*, and, ironically, the theatre has historically hosted more straight plays than musicals.

The Shubert Organization began acquiring shares in the Music Box Theatre from Harris in the 1920s. When Harris died in 1941, his wife sold half the shares in the theatre to the Shuberts, and half to Berlin.

In 2007, the Shubert Organization became the sole owners of the theatre. The Music Box Theatre's facade and interior are New York City landmarks.
