William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin's winning, high-energy musical has been staged all over the country. Now, it returns to New York on the 20th anniversary of its Broadway bow. That premiere was an auspicious one, making stars of original cast members Celia Keenan-Bolger and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. The theatre legend James Lapine directed. Rachel Sheinkin won a Tony Award for her smart, engaging, and hilarious book.

The team behind this revival includes Danny Mefford (director and choreographer), Emily Rebholz (costume designer), David Weiner (lighting designer), Haley Parcher (sound designer), and Teresa L. Williams (scenic designer).

Located beneath the Worldwide Plaza between Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen, New World Stages is a modern performing arts complex with five theatres for Off-Broadway productions.

The building was constructed in 1994 on the site of the third Madison Square Garden. It first opened as a Loews Cineplex Entertainment multiplex cinema, which closed in 2001.

For the next three years, the building underwent substantial renovations and finally reopened as Dodger Stages in 2004, designed by architects Beyer, Blinder, and Belle. The theatre complex was renamed New World Stages on March 16, 2006, and Stage Entertainment assumed sole ownership of the property. The Shubert Organization took over ownership and operation on November 17, 2017.

All five spaces have between 100 and 500 seats, officially deeming New World Stages an Off-Broadway venue. Stage 1 and Stage 3 are the largest theatres in the complex with 499 seats. Stages 2 and 4 offer a 350-seat capacity. Stage 5 is the smallest venue with 199 seats. The Green Room is the official bar and lounge for New World Stages, but it can also be a performance space.

## What to watch for
This revival marks the sixth run of “Oklahoma!” on Broadway.

Director Daniel Fish says his reimaged revival wasn’t “about trying to push the show” but “about trying to really hear it.”

Director Fish, who says “Oklahoma!” was one of the first theatrical shows he saw, has been working on his concept for the musical for over a decade.

The classic score by Rodgers and Hammerstein has been re-orchestrated for a more intimate band, which includes a banjo, pedal steel guitar, mandolin, bass, cello, and violin.

Including a re-envisioned ending and a focus on the show’s darker themes, this production is contemporized with a diverse cast in modern-day clothing.

Simply put, Oklahoma! is perhaps one of the most iconic musicals, not just in the Rodgers &amp; Hammerstein canon, but in Broadway history. The musical marks the first collaboration between composer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II, bursting onto the scene with a 1943 Broadway premiere that swiftly became a box office sensation and ran for a grand total of 2,212 performances. It was also awarded a special Pulitzer Prize in 1944. Since then, the musical has enjoyed no less than five Broadway revivals, including the current critically acclaimed version by director Daniel Fish, three West End productions (including an Olivier Award-winning 1998 National Theatre revival that starred Hugh Jackman), countless national and international tours, and even an Oscar-winning 1955 film adaptation.Based on Lynn Riggs' 1931 play, Green Grow the Lilacs, Oklahoma! is set in 1906 out on the farmyards near Claremore, Indian Territory, and it follows a courtship rivalry between a farm girl Laurey Williams and two would-be suitors in cowboy Curly McLain and menacing farmhand Jud Fry. The musical also depicts a subplot romance between the flirtatious Ado Annie and cowboy Will Parker. In this 75th Anniversary production, expertly crafted by director Daniel Fish, the audience is confronted by all the familiar characters from yesteryear, now sporting modern dress, in an immersive plywood barn setting with guns hanging on the walls and pots of chilli steaming away. Designed by Alan Sayles, the Circle in the Square Theatre (along with its much larger sibling, the [Gershwin Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/gershwin-theatre)) is inside the confines of the Paramount Plaza office tower. The Circle in the Square Theatre was built in 1970 as the Uris Brothers tore down the former Capitol Theatre in order to construct the tower.

The current Broadway theatre is the successor of a same-named Off-Broadway theatre, which operated from 1950 to 1995 at multiple locations in Greenwich Village. The Circle in the Square repertory company staged its first Broadway production — a revival of *Mourning Becomes Electra* — at its current venue on November 15, 1972.

The venue is one of the smallest and most intimate spaces on Broadway. Productions are generally staged in the round, as audiences are seated on three sides of the stage. The theatre is also associated with the Circle in the Square Theatre School, the only accredited drama school attached to a Broadway house.
