*The Fantasticks* is an enduring masterpiece by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt. Thanks to its minimalist but imaginative staging with a few actors, intimate design, and smaller orchestra, the musical has been done all over the world. The play had a decades-long run off Broadway before being revived there as well, but for the first time this story of young love, separation, and reunion is making its way to Broadway.

Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli (*[Schmigadoon!](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/45429-schmigadoon-on-broadway), Newsies*) directs this revival, which features a revised book and lyrics by Jones himself. Performances begin in October 2026 as part of Second Stage's 48th annual season; the theatre is known for giving works a "second stage" to highlight previously successful productions.

“Second Stage Theater has always been the premiere home for contemporary works by both emerging writers and established masters, and this upcoming season is no exception," said Second Stage Artistic Director Evan Cabnet in a statement.

## What to watch for
- Second Stage's season also features the Pulitzer finalist *[Gloria](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/47144-gloria)* by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins.
- Tom Jones (revised book and lyrics) and Harvey Schmidt (music) met at the University of Texas at Austin and later wrote *The Fantasticks* for a summer theatre production at Barnard College.
- The musical is loosely based on the 1894 play *Les Romanesques* by Edmond Rostand.
- Songs from the show include "Try to Remember," "Soon It's Gonna Rain," and "They Were You."

The Fantasticks - NYC - Todaytix

See the long-awaited Broadway bow of this musical masterpiece. The world's longest-running musical thanks to its 42-year run off Broadway, *The Fantasticks* features beloved songs like "Try to Remember," "Soon It's Gonna Rain," "Much More," "Metaphor," and "They Were You." Directed by Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli (*[Schmigadoon!](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/45429-schmigadoon-on-broadway), Newsies*) in a new production, *The Fantasticks* on Broadway offers an update to the original story: instead of featuring two fathers, a son, and daughter, this revival features two mothers and their gay sons who fall in love despite the divisions between them.

Tom Jones (providing the revised book and lyrics) and Harvey Schmidt (the musical's composer) first met in college before going on to write this show that is loosely based on the 1894 play *Les Romanesques* by Edmond Rostand. It has played all over the world thanks to its simple conceit, staging, and orchestra, all of which uplift the charm of this musical jewel.

In *The Fantasticks* the musical, two families are neighbors separated by a wall. The mothers in each household pretend to start a feud in order to, through reverse psychology, get their young sons to fall in love. What follows is a simple, sweet, and beautiful story of first love, separation, and happy reunion.

“Second Stage Theater has always been the premiere home for contemporary works by both emerging writers and established masters, and this upcoming season is no exception," said Second Stage Artistic Director Evan Cabnet in a statement. Second Stage produces the musical, truly making it a special revival with the updated take on the classic show. The musical begins performances in October 2026, staged at the Helen Hayes Theater in Midtown Manhattan.

The Hayes Theater officially opened as The Little Theatre on March 12, 1912. The building was designed by Harry Creighton Ingalls and built by Winthrop Ames, opening with John Galsworthy's play *The Pigeon*.

During the 1920s, the theatre was redesigned by Herbert J. Krapp to increase the capacity from 300 to 590. The New York Times purchased the building in 1931, converting it to a conference hall under the name of New York Times Hall.

In 1979, Martin Markinson and Donald Tick bought the theatre and renamed it in 1983 to the Helen Hayes Theatre to honor the actress. A previous theatre bearing her name was demolished in 1982 to make way for the Marriott Marquis Hotel.

On April 18, 2015, it was officially announced that Second Stage Theater had purchased the property. It was later revealed that the venue would be renamed the Hayes Theater, and it opened in spring 2018. The Hayes Theater is the smallest Broadway theatre, now with 597 seats.

Illinoise on Broadway - Square

Many musicals feature song and dance, but *Illinoise* is something new entirely. Featuring a sparse libretto to help emphasize the music and Justin Peck's choreography, this is a musical that is more about emotions than strict narrative. Peck and Drury, who co-wrote the musical's script, achieve thrilling excitement thanks to their inventive storytelling and staging, and Sufjan Stevens’s playful, plaintive, and yearning music all provides the backdrop and momentum for this one-of-a-kind piece.

Today, many Broadway shows riff on existing films and books, but not as many play with albums to experiment with the form. This makes *Illinoise* stand out: adventurous fans seeking a new kind of Broadway experience will be delighted, but so will those who are perhaps new to Broadway but love Stevens’s soaring melodies and soulful lyrics. Featuring Broadway performers alongside New York City Ballet dancers and bringing together popular music and theatre artists on the creative team, *Illinoise* builds a sacred community on stage and off.

## What to watch for

- *Illinoise* is a special kind of show, but also tried and true: it is coming off of two sold-out, hit productions from this year at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater and in New York at Park Avenue Armory.
- Whether you’re a theatre buff or not, you’ve likely encountered Justin Peck’s work before; he choreographed dance sequences in Steven Spielberg’s *West Side Story* and Bradley Cooper’s *Maestro*, earned a Tony Award nomination for his work on *Carousel*, and is resident choreographer at the New York City Ballet.
- After earning a Grammy nomination, Sufjan Stevens has also made a splash in Hollywood, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song for writing and performing *Call Me By Your Name*’s “Mystery of Love.” *Illinoise* marks his first major foray into theatre and gives audiences a new way to encounter his work.
- Give the original *Illinois* album a listen! It was the best-reviewed album of 2005 on review aggregator Metacritic, and writers at Paste, NPR, and Rolling Stone later named it to "best of the decade" lists.
