About Rope

Get Rope tickets on TodayTix to see this new adaptation of the hit play that inspired Alfred Hitchcock's iconic film. A suspenseful crime thriller starring Corey Fogelmanis, Elizabeth Gillies, Jason Butler Harner, Cameron Monaghan, Graham Phillips, and James Waterston, Rope plays for a limited run this fall starting October 13 at the Theatre at St. Clement's, the new home for The New Group. That theatre company's acclaimed artistic director, Scott Elliott, directs the intoxicating Rope off Broadway.

In Rope, Garrett Stern and Nate Singer have planned the perfect evening complete with great food, fine drinks, and sterling guests. What else? A dead body hidden inside a trunk. Nothing could possibly go wrong — until their evening very much goes off course. Somehow, keeping a murder a secret becomes much harder than committing one.

Rope in New York City is a thrilling murder mystery that is at turns wickedly funny and deliciously dark. After a few drinks, how long can you last fooling those you know most?

More information about Rope

Gordon Greenberg has created a new adaptation of the 1929 play Rope written by Patrick Hamilton. Hollywood legend Alfred Hitchcock saw cinematic potential in the story and adapted and directed it for the screen in his 1948 film, which starred James Stewart and John Dall. The play itself was its own adaptation, as it is said to be inspired by the actual murder of 14-year-old boy in 1924 by two University of Chicago students.

Now, Scott Elliott directs this fresh version of the play that, nearly a century later, retains its suspense, mystery, and thrills. Dinner parties never go out of style, and this one is one for the books. More than just a murder mystery, this story explores themes of power, privilege, and obsession, and the cast includes established actors and Gen Z talent alike: a starry cast performs in this dark comedy, coming to off Broadway this fall.

What to watch for

  • Star lawyer Clarence Darrow defended the college boys accused of murder in the real-life events that inspired the play.
  • The Rope film screenplay was written by Arthur Laurents, known for his musical works Gypsy and West Side Story.
  • The New Group focuses on new plays with star-studded casts. Cynthia Nixon and Parker Posey have performed with the venerate company.
  • Writer Gordon Greenberg is also a Drama Desk-nominated director (The Baker's Wife).
