About Data
Get Data tickets on TodayTix to see Matthew Libby's New York premiere, a thrilling and suspenseful drama about a young programmer who learns his algorithm is the cornerstone of a huge AI surveillance project. Min (The Umbrella Academy).
Data plays an 11-week limited engagement starting January 9, coming to off Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in a production directed by Tyne Rafaeli (Weather Girl, Selling Kabul). Very relevant, great acting, and great writing to make the atmosphere continuously and increasingly tense throughout. Wish it had a more prominent run on Broadway given its relevancy and messaging, but I also understand how controversial AI already is, especially in the arts.
Interesting show with a really cool set...unfortunately overacted.
The actors performances were strong but the story didn't feel like it ever went anywhere.

More information about Data
As AI continues to take over labor, culture, and broader political conversations, Matthew Libby's play is one for the here and now, if audiences are ready to witness its dark prescience.
“When we first discovered Matthew Libby’s thrilling new play Data, we were immediately struck by how powerfully it speaks to our current moment,” said the play's producers in a joint statement. “It’s an innovative, fast-paced play exploring the tension between technology and morality. With an extraordinary cast bringing these characters to life, we’re excited to share this prescient and gripping work with audiences at the Lortel Theatre this winter.”
The play first premiered online during COVID before making its live stage debut at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. last year. Now, it comes to another tech hub, New York City, sharing a sinister and timely tale about how easy it is for us to give up our information, freely, and see it manipulated to horrifying ends.
What to watch for
- The Washington Post said the play "examines the fallible human beings behind the algorithms."
- DC Theater Arts raved that the show highlights "the dehumanizing power of our electronic government."
- Many modern shows have featured on overreaching technology, including Ayad Akhtar's' McNeal and Caryl Churchill's Love and Information.
- Matthew Libby is a two-time Princess Grace Award finalist.
