About Indian Princesses

See this staggering new work from a rising voice, Eliana Theologides Rodriguez. Indian Princesses plays off Broadway at Atlantic Theater Company's Linda Gross Theater for a limited run this spring, starting on April 30. A smart and affecting new play, Indian Princesses in New York follows five young girls of color who attend a special summer camp with their white fathers to better bond the two family members.

Miranda Cornell directs this New York premiere that marks her and Rodriguez's off-Broadway debuts. The moving, honest play about fathers and daughters was chosen as a recipient from The Terrence McNally Foundation for its ingenuity, rigor, and topical themes. Now, it gets its debut at one of off-Broadway's leading theatres, the Atlantic, who have started such Tony Award-winning works as Spring Awakening, Kimberly Akimbo, The Band's Visit, and more.

More information about Indian Princesses

In Indian Princesses, playwright Eliana Theologides Rodriguez examines racial relations through a unique prism: a summer camp for girls of color and their white dads. Taking place in the summer of 2008, an time that led into Barack Obama's historic election, Rodriguez imagines a setting designed to bond families through handmade activities, camp-like adventures... and a heavy dose of cultural appropriation.

However, the girls are at inflection points, and they soon have questions that their fathers are unable – or unwilling – to answer.

The play is deeply autobiographical, inspired by the playwright’s experiences in a father-daughter program of the same name. Indian Princesses offers a tender satire that explores the stories we tell, the histories we don't, and the truths that live inside us, waiting to come out.

Audiences can expect sharp humor and a beating heart in the play, and in each of its characters, no matter their ages or backgrounds.
