Don’t miss this touching new play about recovery, family, and finding clarity in unlikely places.
A young man in a yellow shirt sits holding a backpack and gesturing, while an older man in a white lab coat and glasses listens closely, holding an open book.
A woman hugs a crying young person who is sitting at a blue table. Both appear emotional, and the scene is set against a dark background.

moreInformation

In The Reservoir, Josh’s life is in shambles. He’s moved home to Denver to get sober, but after years of drinking, the fog in his brain won’t lift. Struggling with memory loss, confusion, and shame he finds himself strangely in step with his four aging grandparents.

The story is personal for playwright Jake Brasch, a sober artist from Colorado. Brasch is also a playwright on the rise: they are recent graduate of the Playwriting Program at The Juilliard School. The Reservoir marks Brasch's off-Broadway debut, but the play is already popular around the country: the world premiere was co-produced by the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Alliance Theatre, and Geffen Playhouse, while a second production was presented at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California this fall.

Brasch is known for sly, smart humor and is the writer of HOLE!, which opened to rave reviews at the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

What to watch for

  • Jake Brasch is the recipient of Vineyard Theatre’s 2025 Paula Vogel Award and the Kennedy Center’s 2024 Paula Vogel Playwriting Award.
  • The Reservoir was supported by the Terrence McNally Recovery Commission, named after the Tony-winning writer and given to artists in recovery.
  • Director Shelley Butler staged the world premiere of A Doll's House, Part 2 at South Coast Repertory.
  • The Atlantic has premiered many works that went on to win major Tony Awards, including Spring Awakening, Kimberly Akimbo, The Band's Visit, and more.
