About The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire

See the newest play from Anne Washburn, a Whiting Award-winning playwright. The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire plays for a limited run at downtown's Vineyard Theatre in a production directed by Obie Award winner Steve Cosson.

Experience The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire in New York to see Washburn and Cosson reunite after their hit Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play, “downright brilliant” per The New York Times. The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire off Broadway follows an intentional community that tries to live off the land and keep an unsteady world at bay. But when one of their own dies unexpectedly, ideals are tested and faith in their independence is rocked.

This new work is a tender, funny, probing story about a death, a pageant, a rescue, a resurrection, pigs, and the act of saying grace. The kids may not be all right.

More information about The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire

Set somewhere in foggy Northern California, Anne Washburn's new play is about a community living on the edge and off the grid. A co-production with The Civilians, this new play examines the splinters within a tight-knit community where decisions are collective even as each member holds onto individuality.

The cast features a stacked group of mainstay New York actors: Jeff Biehl, Bartley Booz, Cricket Brown, Donnetta Lavinia Grays, Bruce McKenzie, Bobby Moreno, Tom Pecinka, and Marianne Rendón.

These actors come together to work alongside Washburn, whose seminal play Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play was listed as #4 on The New York Times' list of “The 25 Best American Plays Since Angels in America.” In The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire, Washburn examines a new kind of community of people who, like in Mr. Burns, are banded together for a specific reason. In her works, she shows a knack for how individuals all attempt to coexist, despite the terrors of the outside world.

What to watch for

  • Actor Tom Pecinka was Tony-nominated for his role in Stereophonic.
  • Director Steve Cosson's theatre group The Civilians originated Lucas Hnath’s play Dana H.
  • Playwright Anne Washburn won a 2007 Guggenheim fellowship.
  • Washburn's other plays include Antlia Pneumatica, 10 out of 12, and Shipwreck.
