In Scene Partners, stage and screen legend Wiest plays, ironically, an aspiring movie star. Seventy-five-year-old Meryl decides to move from Milwaukee to Los Angeles with little money and lots of ambition and guts. But even as she tries to reinvent herself, she wonders whether the world will know her for who she truly is.

Under the direction of Tony Award-winning Hadestown director Rachel Chavkin, Scene Partners promises to be a celebration of showbiz and rebirth packed with talent. Set an alert for tickets to Scene Partners off Broadway now.

More information about Scene Partners

Wiest is the rare actress whose stage and screen careers are equally prolific. Between Broadway and off Broadway, she's taken the stage nearly 30 times in between appearing in over 40 films. Of her many credits, she's best known for Hannah and Her Sisters and Bullets Over Broadway, for which she earned her two Oscars. She received an additional nomination for Parenthood and two Emmy Awards for Road to Avonlea and In Treatment.

Her stage career began in the '70s with Happy Birthday, Wanda June, which she performed in on and off Broadway. She's a three-time Drama Desk Award nominee and a Theatre World Award winner. Her most recent stage appearance before Scene Partners in New York was in the Cynthia Nixon-directed Rasheeda Speaking in 2015.

What to Watch For

  • "Scene partners" is a common term in acting; it refers to two people performing a scene together.
  • Playwright Casewell and director Chavkin were both represented on Broadway last season. Casewell's Wet Brain premiered at Playwrights Horizons to critical acclaim, and Chavkin directed How to Defend Yourself at New York Theatre Workshop.
  • There's a lot of stage and screen overlap in Wiest's career. Her 2010 film Rabbit Hole was based on a 2006 play, and Bullets Over Broadway and Footlose got the stage musical treatment after premiering as films.
  • Casewell was the 2020 recipient of Vineyard Theatre's playwriting award named for Paula Vogel. Like Casewell, she is premiering a world-premiere play, Mother Play, this season.
