Gratuitous incest without redeeming quality, poorly handled transitions — felt like a playwright attempting depth and provocation in the style of Paula Vogel without the class or strength of cohesion. Absolutely terrible.

More information about Jonah
Jonah is Bonds's second Off-Broadway play, following Ars Nova and WP Theater's 2017 co-production of Sundown, Yellow Moon. That play featured songs by folk duo The Bengsons, and Bonds wrote additional lyrics as well as the script. Beyond New York, her plays have been workshopped and produced at renowned U.S. institutions like La Jolla Playhouse, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and the Williamstown Theatre Festival.
For Jonah off Broadway, Bonds collaborates with director Danya Taymor. Her numerous Off-Broadway credits include the Pulitzer Prize-nominated play Heroes of the Fourth Turning and Jeremy O. Harris's "Daddy."
What to watch for
- Two is better than one! Rachel Bonds has two shows off Broadway this season: the Jonah play and a New York-premiere musical, The Lonely Few, which she co-wrote with Zoe Sarnak.
- Danya Taymor is also doubly represented in spring 2024. She's directing Jonah as well as The Outsiders Broadway musical.
- Directing talent runs in the family! Danya Taymor's aunt is Tony-winning The Lion King director Julie Taymor.
- Besides being a playwright, Bonds is also a writer for digital media, including film, TV, and podcasts and audio series.
