Linney returns to Broadway for the first time since 2020's My Name Is Lucy Barton, which earned the actress her fifth Tony Award nomination. She's also been nominated for The Little Foxes, Time Stands Still, Sight Unseen, and The Crucible, and has appeared in seven additional Broadway productions. On screen, Linney is best known for her Emmy-nominated performance on Ozark; Emmy-winning performances on Frasier, Wild Iris, The Big C, and John Adams; and Oscar-nominated performances in Kinsey, The Savages, and You Can Count on Me.

Hecht is best known for her roles as Karen on Netflix's Special (which earned her an Emmy nomination), Susan Bunch on the sitcom Friends, and Gretchen Schwarz on the drama series Breaking Bad. She has dozens of additional screen credits and is also a veteran theatre actress, appearing in nine previous Broadway productions.

Proof remains playwright Auburn's best-known play, but he's also had one other show on Broadway: The Columnist. Sullivan has been involved with more than 40 Broadway productions, most as director, including both of Auburn's plays. He has received eight Best Direction of a Play Tony nominations, winning for Proof.

What to Watch For

  • Summer, 1976 takes place during the U.S.'s Bicentennial celebration, commemorating 200 years since America declared independence in the summer of 1776.
  • Linney and Sullivan have worked together before: He directed her and Cynthia Nixon in The Little Foxes in 2017.
  • Linney and Hecht were both nominated for Tonys in 2010 — Linney for Best Leading Actress for Time Stands Still, and Hecht for Best Featured Actress for A View From the Bridge.
  • Summer, 1976 was supposed to premiere off Broadway with MTC, but Linney and Hecht's star power propelled the show straight to the big stage!
