About Suffs

A musical event one hundred years in the making, SUFFS brings to life a complicated chapter in the ongoing battle for the right to vote: the American women’s suffrage movement.

Written by and featuring one of the most exciting new voices in theater, Shaina Taub, this epic new musical starring Nikki M. James (The Book of Mormon), Jenn Colella (Come from Away), Phillipa Soo (Hamilton), and more takes an unflinching look at these unsung trailblazers.

In the seven years leading up to the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, an impassioned group of suffragists — “Suffs” as they called themselves — took to the streets, pioneering protest tactics that transformed the country. They risked their lives as they clashed with the president, the public, and each other.

A thrilling story of brilliant, flawed women working against and across generational, racial, and class divides, SUFFS boldly explores the victories and failures of a fight for equality that is still far from over.

Tell Me More

Suffs off-Broadway turns the clock one century back to the onset of the Women’s Suffrage movement in America. Suffs echoes their voices and examines the lives and legacies of the movement’s key leaders, all to a new musical score by Shaina Taub. Get Suffs tickets in New York on TodayTix.

The legendary women celebrated in Suffs are to thank for the creation of the 19th Amendment, but how did the seven preceding years of protests lead to progress? With an honest lens, Suffs explores all the events leading up to this historic moment for women’s rights, and the impactful, although imperfect, women behind them.

Suffs shows not only the groundbreaking tools of protest created by the suffragists, but the cracks in the foundation that they built. Suffs allows American audiences in the 2020s to look back on this crucial 1920s movement. Get Suffs tickets now on TodayTix.

What to Watch For

  • An exciting new voice in musical theatre, writer and composer Shaina Taub was the 2014 recipient of the Jonathan Larson award. Taub gained notoriety for her work in the Public Theater’s most recent Twelfth Night and As You Like It productions. She is also currently writing the much anticipated The Devil Wears Prada musical adaption!
  • Hamilton star Phillipa Soo plays Inez Milholland, placing her in another historical role.
  • Choreographer Raja Feather Kelly is notorious for his radical downtown surrealist productions, as well as his own dance-theatre-media company, the feath3r theory, which aims to broaden the space for unheard voices. One of Kelly’s most recent choreography credits, before Suffs, is the Pulitzer Prize-winning A Strange Loop.
  • In 2020, Suffs was profiled by the New York Times for their documentary series Offstage. The documentary series highlighted the impact of COVID-19 on theatre-making in 2020.
