You arrive at our airport and wait at the PITCHBLACK Airlines lounge and gate where we prepare you for the journey. We guide you to your seat in a pitch-black cabin. Once on the flight, you will experience a story through sound, smell, taste and touch. You will even feel weather happening inside the room. But everything in complete darkness. Once you exit, we invite you to stay and take in the beauty, life and hope of your new destination.
The PITCHBLACK THEATER technique was developed in Argentina by blind and sighted artists, and it has expanded throughout the world. Alberto, the protagonist, is blind, and the audience experiences his life through the “blind” eyes of his character. Our expert team of technicians will take you on a journey beyond your wildest imagination, challenging your limits and awakening your senses. What you see when you can’t use your eyes – that’s the excitement of ODD MAN OUT.

Odd Man Out is a play about a blind man named Alberto, who is returning from New York to his home of Buenos Aires, Argentina after keeping himself away for decades. As he reflects, audiences travel with him on a journey through his life, beginning with the love of music he developed in boyhood. Alberto learned to play the guitar to eventually launch and lead a successful band, and he traveled all over the world. Some of his travels led to heartbreak and loss, but now he recalls the loves and fears he’s since left behind. The experience is structured as a plane flight, where audiences are welcomed by a “flight attendant” into the production.
Odd Man Out first premiered at Buenos Aires’s Teatro Ciego in 2019. For 15 years, the theatre has created shows performed in complete darkness for its seasons. What to Watch For
- The first in-person, indoor play to premiere in New York since the pandemic, Blindness, was similar in some ways to Odd Man Out. That show was also an immersive audio experience, though the audience was not blindfolded. Blindness, adapted by Simon Stephens from José Saramago’s novel, followed a man who suddenly goes blind, and his condition spreads to others until it becomes an epidemic.
- During the pandemic, Odd Man Out was released as an at-home immersive experience. In lieu of buying a ticket, people paid to get a box sent to their homes, which contained all the objects necessary to experience the play wherever they were.
- 40% of the cast and creative team of Odd Man Out Off-Broadway are themselves blind or low-vision.

Odd Man Out is a phone- and smartwatch-free experience. The show takes place in complete darkness, and any light from a device will ruin the experience for everyone. Your device will be locked in a Yondr pouch, which you may keep with you, during the show. After the show, the staff will open your pouch for you.
Can I leave the room during the performance if I am uncomfortable?
Yes; a staff member will walk you in and out at your request. The venue has a rest area where audiences can hear the show through a special headset if they wish, or else just rest. But once the show begins, re-entry is not allowed.
