More information about Kimberly Akimbo

Pulitzer Prize winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire adapts his own critically acclaimed play Kimberly Akimbo into a brand new musical with music by Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori. Kimberly Akimbo tickets are available now. Get Kimberly Akimbo tickets today.

Kimberly is a sweet, lonely teenage girl stuck in the body of an elderly woman. She suffers from a rare disease, one which causes her to age four and a half times faster than the average person. As if that weren’t enough, Kimberly also has an alcoholic father, rapidly escalating money schemes and her own deteriorating health to worry about. Yet when she finds a rare connection with a teenage boy, Kimberly is thrown into a series of events she could never have dreamed of.

David Lindsay-Abaire’s play Kimberly Akimbo premiered at South Coast Repertory in 2001, then was brought to New York by Manhattan Theatre Club, receiving rave reviews in both productions. Now, Lindsay-Abaire has returned to Kimberly’s amazing story, this time crafting a unique and moving new musical.

He’s joined on the creative team by Jeanine Tesori, who won the Tony Award for Best Original Score for Fun Home. Tesori’s other beloved works include Shrek: The Musical, Violet, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Caroline, or Change.

Kimberly Akimbo off-Broadway is a thrilling and challenging new work presented by Atlantic Theatre Company, which recently hosted the world premiere of The Band’s Visit before that new musical moved to Broadway and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. Get your Kimberly Akimbo tickets today.

What to Watch For

  • Kimberly’s disease is similar to progeria, a real syndrome which causes humans to age faster, though her exact condition is not named in Lindsay-Abaire’s play.
  • Tesori is joined on the creative team by choreographer Danny Mefford. The two previously worked together on Fun Home, which Mefford also choreographed in its original production.
  • Tesori will have two productions of her work running in New York concurrently. The other is Roundabout Theatre Company’s Broadway revival of Caroline, or Change, for which Tesori wrote the music.
  • Director Jessica Stone was previously a musical theatre performer herself, having appeared in the last Broadway revival of Anything Goes among many other credits.
  • In both Lindsay-Abaire’s original play and this Kimberly Akimbo musical adaptation, Kimberly is played by an older female actress, though the character is in fact only a teenager.
