The legendary Studio 54 has been turned into a literal funhouse for this production, trading a traditional theater vibe for something that feels more like a rowdy, late-night party. With Luke Evans and Stephanie Hsu leading the chaos, it’s the kind of night where the audience is just as much a part of the spectacle as the people on stage.

Bill Irwin adapts Molière and stars in it too, playing Argan, a professional hypochondriac scheming to marry his daughter off to a doctor so the house calls come free. She has other plans. Brandon J. Dirden directs the Roundabout production at the Todd Haimes Theatre, and Irwin's clowning pedigree makes him about as well-cast a hypochondriac as Broadway could ask for.

Roundabout's first new Off-Broadway musical in years follows a single donor heart through the 24 hours after a young surfer's death, tracing the two families and the medical team bound together by one transplant. Christopher Ashley, the company's new artistic director, directs a score by Anne and Ian Eisendrath (of KPop Demon Hunters) and a book by Kait Kerrigan, adapted from Maylis de Kerangal's novel Réparer les vivants. It runs at the Laura Pels through December 6.
