As with *Cost of Living* and *Sanctuary City*, Martyna Majok has a knack for exposing realities not often seen on stage. Championing characters from marginalized backgrounds, Majok is a wise, empathetic, and diligent storyteller.

Now, she brings heart and smarts to *Queens*, a story about multiple generations of immigrant women. Living in a basement apartment, they fight to launch a new life. But when a young Ukrainian woman comes searching for the mother who abandoned her years ago, she forces a reckoning with the impossible choices the women made to survive.

With an ear for sharp dialogue and a desire to spotlight unsung New Yorkers' lives, *Queens* chronicles the strivers who sacrificed whole worlds for the chance at something remarkable. What does it mean to leave your home and find one, and a family, somewhere else? Never interested in clean answers, Majok instead explores the singular grey areas that make us human.

Obie Award winner Trip Cullman is no stranger to Manhattan Theatre Club's bold new works; recently, he directed *Choir Boy* and *We Had a World*, a New York Times Critics Pick, on its stages. Now, he returns to direct Majok's play about strivers who sacrificed whole lives and cultures.

Majok has a knack for highlighting the lives of characters who are often marginalized, and as such absent from the American theatre. An immigrant herself from Poland, Majok understands the pursuit of the American Dream and the price of living between cultures. Her new play shines a light on the immigrants who make New York special but are often kept in the shadows.

Despite those specificities, critics have noted how Majok finds the universal in her plays and characters. "If you don’t find yourself in someone onstage in *Cost of Living* you’re not looking," The New York Times wrote of her Pulitzer winner.

Known for her dark humor and individual characters, Majok is a compelling voice who writes startling new plays that demand to be seen.

The **New York City Center** is one of the most influential performing arts venues in New York City. Located at 131 West 55th Street in Manhattan, it serves as a beacon for enthusiasts of dance, music, and theater. **Getting There**

The New York City Center is easily accessible by public transportation. The closest subway stops are 57th Street - 7th Avenue (N/Q/R/W), 57th Street (F), and 55th Street - 7th Avenue (B/D/E). Alternatively, if you're driving, there are several parking garages located nearby, although be aware that parking in Midtown Manhattan can be challenging and expensive. Those wishing to bike will find numerous Citi Bike docking stations in the vicinity.

Architect Harry P. Knowles designed New York City Center, which was built by Clinton and Russell in 1923 for the Shriners under the name of The Mecca Temple. Amid the financial crash of 1929, the building became city property after the Shriners were unable to keep up with tax payments.

Former Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and New York City Council President Newbold Morris decided to convert the temple into Manhattan’s first performing arts center. The building opened as a theatre in December 1943.

New York City Center is known for its annual Encores! productions since 1994, which restage seldom revived American musicals in concert or semi-staged incarnations. The venue received a Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre in 2000.

Since its launch, New York City Center has become one of the city’s prime venues for dance.

In addition to the 2,557-seat mainstage, the facility houses two smaller theatres — Stage I and Stage II, where Manhattan Theatre Club has hosted its Off-Broadway productions since 1984 — and four studios.

New York City Center is closest to the 57th Street station on the N, Q, R, and W lines and the 7th Avenue station on the E, B, and D lines. The nearest bus stops are 6 Av./W 55 St. on the Q2, Q3, Q4, and Q20 lines; and 6 Av./56 St. on the Q10, Q12, and Q24 lines.

The first, *The Twelve Pound Look*, takes place in London a century ago and follows a man who is about to be knighted. Based on the play by J.M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan, the play is a ripped-from-the headlines look at issues of social class, a modern woman's role, and the high price of success. 

The second, *A Sunny Morning*, takes place in a park in Madrid where the hope of love springs eternal, even among 70-year-olds. That work is based on the enchanting play by Spain’s prolific Quintero Brothers.
