Cole Escola moved to New York for college and, after dropping out, found their way into the city’s comedy scene. In 2008, Escola met comedian Jeffery Self, who shared their passions for theatre and ‘90s sitcoms, inspiring them to create a YouTube series as the "Very Good Looking (VGL) Gay Boys." Following the cult success of their videos, they received their own TV show on Logo, *Jeffery & Cole Casserole*, which ran for two seasons. Escola later had roles on *Difficult People*, *Search Party*, *Big Mouth*, *At Home with Amy Sedaris* (which earned them a Writers Guild Award), and more before writing and leading the original cast of *Oh, Mary!*

Beyond acting, Escola wrote for comedy TV shows like *Ziwe*, *The Other Two*, and *Difficult People*. In 2021, they released a YouTube rendition of their live special "Help! I'm Stuck With Cole Escola" and, in 2023, they released an homage to '70s westerns on YouTube called "Our Home Out West." Vanity Fair added Escola’s performance to its 25 Best Performances of 2023 list.

## What to watch for

- While *Oh, Mary!* marks Escola’s Broadway debut, they’re no stranger to performing in New York. The Public Theater’s Joe’s Pub was a stop on the tour of their live solo show *Help! I'm Stuck.* 
- Numerous Hollywood actresses have played Mary Todd Lincoln in film and television adaptations of President Abraham Lincoln’s life. They include Mary Tyler Moore, Sally Field, Donna Murphy, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. 
- Director Sam Pinkleton is best known as a Broadway choreographer for hit musicals like *Amelie* and *Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812*, for which he earned a Tony Award nomination.
- *Oh, Mary!* features original music by Daniel Kluger, a Tony-nominated composer, orchestrator, and sound designer known for his work on shows like *The Sound Inside*, *Significant Other*, and the 2019 revival of *Oklahoma!*

## Who is Cole Escola?

The Lyceum Theatre is one of Broadway's longest running, and most storied venues. It is the oldest continually operating theatre in New York City, delivering its rich tradition and history since opening its doors in 1903. Uniquely, it is one of the few theatres that was built and still operates as a legitimate theatre.  ## How to Get to the Venue 
 The Lyceum Theatre is prominently situated at 149 W 45th Street, almost in the very heart of Manhattan. It is well-serviced by public transport with several subway stations nearby - Times Square-42nd St (N,Q,R,S,1,2,3,7), 42nd St-Bryant Park (B,D,F,M), and 47th-50th streets-Rockefeller Center (B,D,F,M). Lyceum Theatre  - TodayTix

The Lyceum Theatre is Broadway's oldest continually operating theatre. Designed by Herts & Tallant and built by producer-manager David Frohman, the theatre officially opened on November 2, 1903. It was a replacement for Frohman's previous Lyceum Theatre on Fourth Street, which closed in 1902.

The inaugural production at the venue was the play *The Proud Prince*. The Lyceum Theatre was purchased in 1940 by a conglomerate of producers which included George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, and in 1950, the Shubert Organization took ownership of the theatre. In 1974, the Lyceum Theatre became the first Broadway theatre to be granted landmark status.

The Lyceum Theatre is closest to the 42nd Street - Times Square subway stop on the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, and S lines. The closest bus stops are 6th Ave/W 44th St. on the M55, QM2, QM3, QM4, QM15, QM16, QM17, QM18, and QM20 lines; and 6th Ave/West 45th St. on the QM1, QM5, QM6, M5, and M7 lines.

*Heathers* is a dark musical comedy that’s, in wonderful and campy ways, partly a satire of high school life. This comes as no surprise looking at the creators, Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe, who have created high-octane hits like *Legally Blonde, Bat Boy*, and *Reefer Madness*. Like those shows, *Heathers* showcases young characters contending with the pains of adolescence and growing up. The musical, like the movie, does not shy away from heavier material: suicide, mental health, body image issues, and drug use are all addressed. 

Nonetheless, there are many laughs along the way — and hit songs like “Seventeen,” “Lifeboat,” and “Freeze Your Brain.”. A precursor to the film *Mean Girls* (and its subsequent stage show), *Heathers* was ahead of its time as a late-80s film that continues to resonate with young audiences today. London Theatre raved, “This musical has the power to tap into all of the tempestuous emotions associated with being a teenager.”

The *Heathers* musical first premiered in 2013 in Los Angeles before running off Broadway the following year. This new production originated in 2018 in London's West End before going on to have two national tours and an encore engagement in the West End.

## What to watch for

- One line from the movie — "I don't patronize bunny rabbits" — was cut from the musical until Winona Ryder saw the show in L.A. and asked that it be added back in. It's remained in every major production since!
- One character, Ms. Fleming, ad-libs a section of the song "Shine a Light" at every performance, and it's different every night.
- In various scenes, the ensemble appears in white robes and 3-D glasses, a direct nod to the costuming in a key scene from the movie.
- One scene takes place in a cow pasture dubbed "Lehmann's Farm," a nod to *Heathers* film director Michael Lehmann.
- The original film starred Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, Kim Walker, and Penelope Milford.

In *Heathers*, based on the hit 1988 film, Veronica Sawyer navigates the dicey waters of Westerberg High School: her friend is bullied for being fat; she crushes on a mysterious, brooding boy who might have a deadly streak; and the Heathers clique reigns supreme. A trio of girls all with the first name Heather are conniving, thorny, and all-powerful. Will Veronica be able to beat the Heathers at their own game without losing herself along the way?

*Heathers* features hit songs like “Seventeen,” “Lifeboat,” and “Freeze Your Brain” in this adaptation by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe, two musical theatre writers who know how to write fun, campy roles and songs for young artists — especially in shows that are stage adaptations. Murphy wrote the book and lyrics for *Reefer Madness*, and O’Keefe wrote the music and lyrics for *Legally Blonde*.

Despite those energetic musicals, *Heathers* does deal with darker themes, including body image issues, suicide, bullying, and more. However, such issues are what make the musical popular amongst a younger generation.
