Cole Escola moved to New York for college and, after dropping out, found their way into the city’s comedy scene. In 2008, Escola met comedian Jeffery Self, who shared their passions for theatre and ‘90s sitcoms, inspiring them to create a YouTube series as the "Very Good Looking (VGL) Gay Boys." Following the cult success of their videos, they received their own TV show on Logo, *Jeffery & Cole Casserole*, which ran for two seasons. Escola later had roles on *Difficult People*, *Search Party*, *Big Mouth*, *At Home with Amy Sedaris* (which earned them a Writers Guild Award), and more before writing and leading the original cast of *Oh, Mary!*

Beyond acting, Escola wrote for comedy TV shows like *Ziwe*, *The Other Two*, and *Difficult People*. In 2021, they released a YouTube rendition of their live special "Help! I'm Stuck With Cole Escola" and, in 2023, they released an homage to '70s westerns on YouTube called "Our Home Out West." Vanity Fair added Escola’s performance to its 25 Best Performances of 2023 list.

## What to watch for

- While *Oh, Mary!* marked Escola’s Broadway debut as a writer and actor, they’re no stranger to performing in New York. The Public Theater’s Joe’s Pub was a stop on the tour of their live solo show *Help! I'm Stuck.*
- Numerous Hollywood actresses have played Mary Todd Lincoln in film and television adaptations of President Abraham Lincoln’s life. They include Mary Tyler Moore, Sally Field, Donna Murphy, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
- Director Sam Pinkleton is best known as a Broadway choreographer for hit musicals like *Amelie* and *Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812*, for which he earned a Tony Award nomination.
- *Oh, Mary!* features original music by Daniel Kluger, a Tony-nominated composer, orchestrator, and sound designer known for his work on shows like *The Sound Inside*, *Significant Other*, and the 2019 revival of *Oklahoma!*

*Oh, Mary!* on Broadway is a comedic juggernaut, a play like no other that sold out its Off-Broadway run before transferring to the Lyceum Theatre, where it has enjoyed equal success. Cole Escola is known for their TV credits as a writer and actor, alongside quirky YouTube sketch videos, before hitting their big break with this tremendous Broadway debut. History buffs beware: Little in the show is based on fact, which is exactly what makes it so hilarious. Trust the critics: Entertainment Weekly called it "the funniest play on Broadway."

## What to watch for

- Performers who have donned the bratty curls and played Mary Todd Lincoln in this production include Cole Escola, Maya Rudolph, Tituss Burgess, Betty Gilpin, Jane Krakowski, Jinkx Monsoon, Meg Stalter, and more.
- The New York Times calls the show “one of the best comedies in years.”
- In one beloved gag, Mary simply gets down from a table. How she does it is incomprehensible — and hilarious.
- The gags in the play include plenty of wit, physical comedy, and period commentary.

*Oh, Mary!* on Broadway is one of New York’s fiercest comedies in years, dreamt up from the singular mind of Tony Award-nominated actor/writer Cole Escola. In this hilarious riff on history (with a big emphasis on riff), First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln nurses can’t understand any of her husband’s political concerns and simply wants to be a cabaret star. It’s a lot for her to carry, and a chaperone (plus booze) hardly helps. But this Mary Todd Lincoln is determined to do things her own way — and boy, will she. Oh, Mary! Broadway Tickets | The Official NY Theatre Guide

This dark comedy shines a spotlight on Mary Todd Lincoln and the challenges she faced in her time as First Lady — but with plenty of irreverent, silly twists. This intimate portrayal of Mary's internal struggles takes on a new character through queer comic playwright Cole Escola's unconventional perspective. Now nominated for five Tony Awards.

After an [acclaimed](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/oh-mary-off-broadway-review-cole-escola) Off-Broadway run, [*Oh, Mary!*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/37743-oh-mary) lands on Broadway with a triumphant flourish. Playwright and star [Cole Escola](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/cole-escola) is practically radiant as they bring a larger-than-life version of Mary Todd Lincoln to life at the [Lyceum Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/venues/lyceum-theatre-ny), a venue beautiful and distinguished enough to assassinate a president in.

Escola, as Mary, is mesmerizing to watch with bouncing pin curls, whirling hoop skirt, and an angelic face that is constantly at odds with the vitriol the character spews (both literally and figuratively). Mary is intensely physical - her first entrance on stage is frantic and angry, a perfect setup for her defining character traits. She stomps around the room, swirls her enormous dress, and kicks up her skirts to reveal cartoonish white-and-red-polka-dotted bloomers more than a few times.

Mary’s perfect foil is the oh-so-stoic (or at least, trying to be) Abraham Lincoln, billed simply as “Mary’s Husband” and played with equal hilarity as a repressed gay guy by [Conrad Ricamora](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/conrad-ricamora). Abe’s melodramatic hand-wringing over the ongoing Civil War is no match for Mary’s violent tantrums and fantastic lack of awareness. (“I wish we really WERE at war!” she cries after not getting her way.)

Their character approaches are immediately obvious in their respective accents: Ricamora’s Lincoln speaks with a very manly ultra-Americanness, while Escola’s Mary is a transatlantic diva.

Together with James Scully as Mary’s handsome drama teacher, Bianca Leigh as Mary’s long-suffering chaperone, and Tony Macht as Abe’s extremely pliant assistant, the entire ensemble elevates very silly jokes into a work of art that keeps you riveted from start to finish. Suffice it to say that when the lights went up after the curtain call, my guest and I agreed we had literally laughed until our faces hurt.

## *Oh, Mary!* summary

Fresh from its Off-Broadway run at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in the West Village this past spring, *Oh, Mary!* is enjoying a Broadway run that can be owed to none other than its own unexpected success. Writer Cole Escola stars as a fictionalized version of FLOTUS Mary Todd Lincoln, who has turned to alcoholism and violent outbursts to cope with the fact that her stuck-up husband is keeping her from her one true love: performing cabaret.

Desperate to keep Mary distracted from her desire for stardom, Abe Lincoln employs an acting teacher to run lines of Shakespeare with his wife. At first, it seems to be the best case scenario for everyone: Mary is busy with lessons, she falls in love with her teacher, and she’s even eyeing a return to the stage.

But when Mary realizes the men in her life will never have her best interests at heart, she decides to take matters into her own hands with a theatricality only she - and Escola - can achieve.

## What to expect at *Oh, Mary!*

Possibly the most important thing to understand about *Oh, Mary!* is that almost nothing about the plot is historically accurate, nor does it strive to be. While the [real-life Mary Todd Lincoln](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/the-real-history-behind-oh-mary-on-broadway) likely struggled with mental health issues, that is definitely not what is going on here. Instead, stifled by the boredom of presidency and war, Mary yearns for her former life as a “rather well-known niche cabaret legend.”

The Lyceum Theatre is almost too perfect for *Oh, Mary!*, with its evocation of both old-timey theatres and a bygone era of opulent cabaret. The show is a tight 80 minutes with no intermission and nearly no breaks in the volleys of jokes, which earned near-uninterrupted laughter from my audience. Bawdiness and references to alcoholism abound, as well as a cheerfully irreverent characterization of our nation’s 16th president (not to mention his wife).

## What audiences are saying about *Oh, Mary!*

## Who should see *Oh, Mary!*

- Fans of Cole Escola's past projects, like their YouTube shows and HBO's *Search Party*, will not want to miss *Oh, Mary!*, in what just may be the peak of all of their work to date.
- Fans of the 2022 film *Fire Island* will enjoy seeing romantic leads Conrad Ricamora and James Scully take on roles in *Oh, Mary!* that allow them both to showcase just how wide their acting ranges can be.
- Anyone who loves irreverent, silly comedy along the lines of Monty Python or *Saturday Night Live* will not want to miss this show, which is probably the most irreverent, silliest show on Broadway (in the best way possible).

Perhaps the best parts of *Oh, Mary!* are the seriously hilarious, oh-so-fitting plot twists that are just too juicy to reveal. The only way to be in the joke is to see it for yourself.

The Lyceum Theatre is one of Broadway's longest running, and most storied venues. It is the oldest continually operating theatre in New York City, delivering its rich tradition and history since opening its doors in 1903. Uniquely, it is one of the few theatres that was built and still operates as a legitimate theatre. The stunning Beaux-Arts style facade and grandiose interior, designed by architects Herts & Tallant, are part of what make a night at Lyceum truly unforgettable one. The theatre has been home to a vast array of productions, from plays to musicals, and has played a key role in shaping the Broadway landscape. Some of the notable performances include 'The Voice Of The Turtle', 'Othello', 'Born Yesterday', and more recently, the Tony award-winning 'The Play That Goes Wrong'.

 ## How to Get to the Venue
The Lyceum Theatre is prominently situated at 149 W 45th Street, almost in the very heart of Manhattan. It is well-serviced by public transport with several subway stations nearby - Times Square-42nd St (N,Q,R,S,1,2,3,7), 42nd St-Bryant Park (B,D,F,M), and 47th-50th streets-Rockefeller Center (B,D,F,M). The Lyceum Theatre is Broadway's oldest continually operating theatre. Designed by Herts & Tallant and built by producer-manager David Frohman, the theatre officially opened on November 2, 1903. It was a replacement for Frohman's previous Lyceum Theatre on Fourth Street, which closed in 1902.

The inaugural production at the venue was the play *The Proud Prince*. The Lyceum Theatre was purchased in 1940 by a conglomerate of producers which included George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, and in 1950, the Shubert Organization took ownership of the theatre. In 1974, the Lyceum Theatre became the first Broadway theatre to be granted landmark status.

A unique, contemporary rom-com that won the 2025 Tony Award for Best Musical, *Maybe Happy Ending* follows two robots who meet, connect, and maybe fall in love, getting a second shot at life after the world has deemed them obsolete.

Get *Maybe Happy Ending* tickets and see robots meet, connect, and maybe even fall in love in the 2025 Tony Award winner for Best Musical.

In a one-room apartment in the heart of Seoul, South Korea, Oliver lives an ordered and cozy, quiet life listening to his jazz records and caring for his favorite plant. He’s just a HelperBot 3, after all: a robot that has long been retired and is now considered obsolete. That doesn’t mean his life is over. When his fellow HelperBot neighbor Claire knocks on the door and asks to borrow his charger, what starts as a clumsy encounter leads to a unique friendship, a surprising adventure, and perhaps even something greater.

The musical, with book and music by Will Aronson and book and lyrics by Hue Park, premiered at Alliance Theatre where it won the Richard Rodgers Production Award. The Atlantic Journal Constitution called it “dazzling, a tour-de-force” and Atlanta InTown said the show is “breathtakingly beautiful to watch. You will see stage magic that you’ve never experienced in person in the live theatre.”

Now, the musical about the small things that make life worth living comes to Broadway. Get tickets to *Maybe Happy Ending* on Broadway now.
