St. Ann's Warehouse was founded in 1980 as Arts at St. Ann's, having been located at the site of the former Church of St. Ann and the Holy Trinity in Brooklyn. The company changed names and venues in 2001, becoming St. Ann's Warehouse and operating out of a spice milling factory in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn.

It made one more move in 2014 to the historic Tobacco Warehouse in DUMBO, built in 1860, where St. Ann's Warehouse still resides today. In its early days, the company presented classical music concerts, but is now known for experimental theatre works and shows that blend theatrical and concert styles.
