Abigail’s Party is a play set in 1970s Essex. Beverly and her husband, Laurence, invite their new neighbors, Angela and Tony, over for drinks, along with Sue from next door. There is alcohol and good music playing; snacks and special drinks are ready for the guests. Just next door, their teenage daughter Abigail is throwing a much rowdier party.
The events that follow do not create the relaxing atmosphere Beverly was hoping for. As the alcohol keeps being poured, the energy in Beverly’s living room tilts as awkward small talk dissolves into inappropriate flirtations and resentment. Tamzin Outhwaite stars as Beverly, with Kevin Bishop as Laurence, Pandora Colin as Sue, Omar Malik as Tony, and Lauren Patel as Angela.

Abigail’s Party in London was written by Mike Leigh. It premiered in 1977, the same year it was famously adapted for the BBC’s Play for Today. Developed through improvisation with its original cast, the play became one of Leigh’s most defining works, and it remains a biting representation of British suburbia and the materialism and cruelties that hide within its stratosphere.
This production transfers to the Harold Pinter Theatre following its Stratford East run and UK tour. Nadia Fall directs the show, with set and costume design by Peter McKintosh, lighting design by Howard Harrison, and sound design by Alexandra Faye Braithwaite.
This show is set over one long, excruciating evening in Essex. Abigail’s Party proves that sometimes, the most dangerous place one can be is within the living room of a seemingly innocent suburban household. Audiences are sure to get a good laugh out of this darkly witty comedy meant to keep you seated and entertained the entire time.
