Debuting in 2022 at Utah's Pioneer Theatre Company and later transferring to Broadway in 2023, the original cast included Caroline Innerbichler, John Behlmann, Andrew Durand, and Alex Newell. The latter went on to win the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.
Shucked is the culmination of a 12-year journey. It was initially named Hee Haw: The Musical (later changed to Moonshine: That Hee Haw Musical), but it eventually evolved into what is now Shucked. The musical opened to overwhelmingly positive reviews and received nine nominations at the 76th Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
What to watch for
- Shucked was originally titled Moonshine: That Hee Haw Musical inspired by the TV show Hee Haw. The musical, which had a limited run in Texas, underwent a complete transformation, and Shucked is a very different show from its original inception.
- While Shucked has moved away from its Hee Haw roots, it retains some similarities with its predecessor. Both take place in Kornfield Kounty, and characters like Gordy and Lulu have remained in the show.
- Robert Horn is also known for his work on Tootsie, for which he won the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical.
