**GETTING TO ROYAL OPERA HOUSE**

Access to the Royal Opera House is as straightforward as the performances are nuanced. The nearest tube station is Covent Garden on the Piccadilly Line. It's approximately 3 minutes' walk away. Other close tube stations include Leicester Square, Charing Cross, and Holborn. If choosing to drive, the venue is inside the London congestion charge zone, with several NCP car parks located nearby. Limited metered parking is available in surrounding streets. For cyclists, Santander Cycles is conveniently located in the immediate vicinity.

Royal Opera House - TodayTix

The Royal Opera House opened in 1858. The building was previously destroyed twice by fire (once in 1808 and again in 1856). It was originally named the Theatre Royal Covent Garden.

The Opera House assembled its own in-house opera company, and premiered Purcell's *The Fairy Queen* in December 1946 in association with the ballet company. The Covent Garden Opera Company’s first operatic production after the Second World War was *Carmen* in January 1947.

The building was extensively renovated in the late 1990s to update the facilities to meet the demands of modern productions and the advances in technology, and a smaller auditiorium (the 400-seater Linbury Studio) was built to house experimental productions and give new artists and new works a performing ground. 

## Royal Opera House Seating Information

The auditorium has five levels – Orchestra Stalls, Stalls Circle, Grand Tier, Balcony and Amphitheatre. 

The upper four levels are designed in a horseshoe design around the Orchestra Stalls and can feel rather removed from the stage. Boxes, lower and upper tier slips line the sides of the auditorium, but can offer side-on, restricted views.

Tamsin Greig was born in 1966 in Kent and then moved to Kilburn at a young age. She later studied at the University of Birmingham, graduating with a first in Drama and Theatre Arts. She has since established herself as a comedian and an actress on stage, alongside extensive work on screen.

Greig won her first Laurence Olivier Award for her role of Beatrice in *Much Ado About Nothing*, also winning the Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for Best Shakespearean Performance, becoming the first woman to ever win the award. She later starred in *[God of Carnage](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/god-of-carnage)* alongside Ralph Fiennes and Ken Scott, which won the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in 2009. She then appeared in David Hare's *[Gethsemane](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/gethsemane)* before starring and receiving her second Olivier nomination in *[The Little Dog Laughed](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/the-little-dog-laughed)* at the [Garrick Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/garrick-theatre).

In 2011 she took on the role of Hilary in *[Jumpy](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/jumpy-royal-court-theatre-2011)*, which first premiered at the [Royal Court](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/royal-court-theatre) and then transferred to the West End’s [Duke of York’s Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/duke-of-yorks-theatre). Following this she played Varia in *Longing* at [Hampstead Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/hampstead-theatre), then later appeared in [*Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/women-on-the-verge-of-a-nervous-breakdown) at the [Playhouse Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/playhouse-theatre). For this performance she received another Olivier Award nomination.

Outside the theatre, Greig has appeared in many television shows including *Friday Night Dinner* as Jackie, in BBC’s *Love Soup* as Alice Chenery, as Fran Katzenjammer in *Black Books* and Dr Caroline Todd in *Green Wing*. She also starred in *Cuckoo* alongside Richard E Grant and later in *Tamara Drewe*.

In 2017 Greig returned to the National Theatre in *[Twelfth Night](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/twelfth-night-national-theatre-2017)* by William Shakespeare as Malvolia. She then starred in *[Labour of Love](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/labour-of-love)* at the Noel Coward Theatre, replacing Sarah Lancashire. Greig's latest theatre credit is *[Peggy For You](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/peggy-for-you)* at the Hampstead Theatre.

Greig will star in *The Deep Blue Sea* at Theatre Royal Haymarket this year.
