A visit to a fortune teller reveals both good news and a warning for King Gustavus: his best friend’s wife Amelia loves him back! But the next man to shake his hand will be his killer.
That man happens to be his best friend, an enraged Count who sees a sumptuous masked ball as the perfect place for vengeance.
Based on a true story of the assassination of Sweden’s King Gustav III, this brand-new production is the Royal Opera debut of German Director Philipp Stölzl, whose work has spanned from cinema to theatre to music videos for Pavarotti, Madonna and Mick Jagger.
Sung in Italian with English surtitles, which are displayed on screens above the stage and around the auditorium.
