About Summer

The 1970s. HEAVEN WAS A DANCE FLOOR. DONNA SUMMER REIGNED OVER IT ALL.

She was a girl from Boston with a voice from heaven who shot through the stars from gospel choir to dance floor diva. But what the world didn’t know was how Donna Summer risked it all to break through barriers, becoming the icon of an era and the supreme queen for every diva who followed.

More information about Summer

You’re in store for some hot stuff, baby! Donna Summer invites you to the concert of a lifetime at “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical” — and with three disco divas taking you on the journey through Summer’s Grammy-winning discography, this evening is just that. You’ll be introduced to LaDonna Adrian Gaines, the young Boston church choir singer born who went onto rule the disco era of the 1970s.

Exploring Summer’s ups and downs and steamy love affairs — including her relationship with her second husband, musician Bruce Sudano — “Summer” features explosive musical numbers directed by Tony Award winner Des McAnuff and choreographed by Tony nominee Sergio Trujillo. LaChanze, Ariana DeBose, and Storm Lever bring down the house with Donna Summer classics like “Bad Girls,” “She Works Hard for the Money,” “MacArthur Park,” “Heaven Knows,” “No More Tears,” and “Love to Love You Baby.”

What to watch for

To create consistency among the three actresses who play Donna, costume designer Paul Tazewell dressed each actress in a deep, Walton blue.

Director Des MacNuff is no stranger to the jukebox musical. Before “Summer,” he directed “The Who’s Tommy,” featuring the music of The Who, and “Jersey Boys,” the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

Talk about girl power! “Summer” is comprised of a mostly female ensemble, who are often seen playing men.
