About Rhinoceros

Set an alert for when Rhinoceros tickets go on sale to see Emmy Award winner Tatiana Maslany (Orpahn Black), Tony Award winner Tony Shalhoub (The Band's Visit), and Emmy Award winner John Turturro (Monk) star in this famously absurd dark comedy. Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (Pippin) brings the acclaimed production to New York City after its lauded run in Boston. Rhinoceros plays as part of Roundabout Theatre Company's current season, starting performances this spring for a limited run only.

In Rhinoceros in New York City, Eugène Ionesco’s landmark play returns to Broadway for the first time since 1961. Both hilarious and chilling, this dark comedy follows a town of people who slowly turn into, yes, rhinoceroses. With a critical eye tackling conformity, individualism, and how groupthink takes hold, Rhinoceros is a startling play for our time and an absurdist masterpiece about preserving selfhood in a culture careening toward sameness.

More information about Rhinoceros

Can you hear it? Yes, it is the sound of the stampede of hooves, the trumpeting of beasts, and your friends, peers, and neighbors changing skin before your very eyes. In Rhinoceros, people slowly begin changing into the massive beasts — but what does it all mean? Eugène Ionesco was a master of the absurd and an experimental force. He's also having a bit of a moment: this is the second one of his shows to transfer to Boston to New York City. First, Delirium came to Irondale in Brooklyn and, now, this play — which started at A.R.T. in Cambridge — is transferring to Broadway after a smash run. As humans in the play begin morphing into animals, do we maintain our humanity, or join the herd?

The play was heralded as “outlandishly funny and eerily realistic" in The Wall Street Journal. Audiences can expect a timely look at what it means to stand apart from the crowd.

What to watch for

  • The Boston Globe said “in A.R.T.’s Rhinoceros, you don’t laugh until it hurts. You laugh and then it hurts.”
  • WBUR said the production had “stellar performances…expertly directed. The absurdist play is funnier, and more thought-provoking than I could have imagined.”
  • Roundabout Theatre Company presents a variety of new plays and classic revivals, often with starry casts.
  • Derek Prouse provides the translation for this play.
