About I Became We
Get I Became We tickets to see the newest play by Mona Pirnot, a downtown artist known for her vulnerable and striking works. I Became We in New York City is a premeire play that is a first-person monologue performed by a sixteen-person choir. Known for her formally adventurous works, Pirnot here musicalizes her personal story as she did in I Love You So Much I Could Die at New York Theatre Workshop. Now, I Became We plays at another audacious off-Broadway theatre: the Atlantic, which is known for other landmark musical works like Spring Awakening, The Band's Visit, and Kimberly Akimbo.
I Became We off Broadway marks Pirnot's return to the Atlantic: she previously debuted her play I'm Assuming You Know David Greenspan there. Now, she returns with a unique choral play where a group of 16 singers voice the contradictory and complex thoughts in one 30-something woman's head.

Adored this. I don’t think it’s billed correctly. It’s a choral piece that delivers a stunning monologue. Which I can see not filling seats so I get it. This piece is so much more than “should I have kids?”. This was about the passing of time, and how maturing often softens our perspectives. It’s was hilarious, and touching in a way I rarely see on stage. It’s not jaded or performative or looking to be something it’s not. I bawled from laughter, joy and tenderness. I felt like my chest was filled with fireworks and I can’t thank the playwright enough. More, please.
Innovative use of choral musicians to tell a story.

More information about I Became We
Mona Pirnot is known for opening herself up in unique and theatrical ways on stage. In I Love You So Much I Could Die at New York Theatre Workshop, she performed with her back to the audience, sharing intimate songs about loss and love that were interspersed with diary entry-like texts read aloud by a computer program.
Next, in I'm Assuming You Know David Greenspan at the Atlantic, she looked at one writer's decision to leave or stay in the theatre, comically giving voice to the industry's hilarious antics and economic frustrations. As a playwright herself, Pirnot took jabs at her own field in vulnerable and moving ways as theatre legend David Greenspan performed as a chorus of young writers.
Now, another chorus takes the stage: 16 singers will perform a single monologue that articulates the difficult decisions that come with being a 30-something artist. With riveting music by Relentless Award-winning composer Jack D. Coen, I Became We is a theatrical event not to miss.
