About ANON

Get ANON: a tempest at our kitchen table tickets on TodayTix to see this new play from theatre icon Anne Washburn, author of Mr. Burns, a post-electric play and The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire. Washburn, a Guggenheim fellow and Whiting Award winner, pairs up with Obie Award winner and Tony Award nominee Anne Kauffman (*Mary Jane, Marjorie *Prime), who directs this premiere.

Concerning contemporary politics and online performance, ANON: a tempest at our kitchen table plays for a limited run at The Newman Mills Theatre at the Robert W. Wilson MCC Theatre Space starting September 25. The play is set in Texas and follows an increasingly online social media user who notices a gay Pride flag unfurled across the street from her home.

More information about ANON

ANON: a tempest at our kitchen table is a timely new play about hyperonline culture, modern politics, and the performance of taking a side. For anyone who is used to spending time scrolling and scrolling through their social media feeds, this may all sound familiar, but Anne Washburn is a playwright known for subverting expectations and cracking open seemingly simple concepts with a lot of rigor, grace, and curiosity. She is a pioneering and imaginative writer, as seen when she burst onto the scene with her epic and science fiction-infused opus, Mr. Burns, a post-electric play.

Now, Washburn is back in New York City with another premiere, coming to a theatre known for its equally bold programming: MCC in Midtown, Manhattan. In the play, meet Jeanie: a TikToker in a Texas suburb. Two seemingly different households freak out when a Pride flag is raised, asking: how well do  you know actually know your neighbors?

What to watch for

  • Responding to our times, Anne Washburn's play asks if the line between reality and fantasy, in a hyperonline world, is becoming increasingly optional.
  • The cast includes Jeff Biehl, Crystal Finn, Andrew Garman, Izabel Mar, and Jeremy Shamos.
  • Director Anne Kauffman is known for her collaborations on bold works, prioritizing new American plays.
  • Washburn's Mr. Burns was a Drama League Award nominee for Outstanding Production and was praised by The New York Times as "downright brilliant."
