About How Shakespeare Saved My Life

In the Red Bull Theater production of HOW SHAKESPEARE SAVED MY LIFE, Jacob Ming-Trent dares to rescue himself from the “slings and arrows” of his past. Born with a gift for poetry but rejected as unfit to play the part of the poet, Ming-Trent invites us to take a deep dive into the crevices of his youth. His search for home is relentless, and the results are by turns hilarious and tragic. Calling on the Bard and a host of genius rappers, half-crazed preachers, and soulful poets to throw him a lifeline, he takes us on a propulsive ride that reaffirms the power of language. It all adds up to one man’s attempt to reclaim his life, and through that journey we connect to the deeper parts of ourselves, and, ultimately, to each other. Directed by Tony Taccone.

A one-man show in which Jacob Ming-Trent leads us on an intimate journey through his tumultuous life, playing many of the people who influenced him, including his absentee father, his troubled mother, the rough-and-tumble older guys who gave him a home after his mother kicked him out, and his teachers. We see how, while still a teen, he fell in love with the Bard, a romance that would eventually lead to his successful career as an actor. Ming-Trent is funny and charming at some moments, heartbreaking at others, and his talent for mimicry--with a mere change of voice, or the minutest tweak in his gait, posture and physicality, he BECOMES his characters--is first-rate. A deeper dive into his drama school days would have been welcome--and maybe even how he felt while, let's say, he was out pounding the sidewalk looking for work (there wasn't nearly as much of that as I thought there would be)--but no matter. "How Shakespeare Saved My Life" is as inspirational an evening of theatre as you're ever likely to see.

An autobiographical story filled with grief and acceptance. It was absolutely beautiful! He’s so talented and I hope to see him on broadway one day!

Jacob Ming-Trent does an amazing job in this original one-man show, weaving Shakespearean speeches from numerous familiar plays into the story of his broken childhood, in which his mother never loved him, and his father was an addicted criminal, unable to provide. Shakespeare saved his life. Forgiveness is the ticket to happiness, and he incorporated that lesson into his theatrical life and made it a success. My friend, who'd been to exactly four performances in his life before attending this one, loved it. We had third row center seats and were both totally enthralled with the excellent performance. I simply adore Shakespeare, and this was the ONLY play available in New York while my friend was here even remotely related to Shakespeare, so it was a MUST. Definitely wonderful, wonderful and most wonderful.
