About Proof

Set an alert for when Proof tickets go on sale with TodayTix to see this buzzy revival of David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize-winning play starring Emmy Award winner Ayo Edebiri and Academy Award nominee Don Cheadle. Directed by Tony Award winner Thomas Kail (Hamilton), Proof plays at the Booth Theatre starting this spring in a new production.

See Proof in New York to catch the Tony Award-winning play's first major revival since it became a hit in 2000 at Manhattan Theatre Club. Proof on Broadway focuses on Catherine (Edebiri), the daughter of Robert (Cheadle), legendary math genius and University of Chicago professor. Catherine cared for her dying father, who also coped with mental illness, but now fears she may have inherited more than his smarts. Along the way, she must also assert to her sister and father's student that it was indeed her, not her father, who came up with a paradigm-shifting proof about prime numbers.

More information about Proof

Proof was a groundbreaking play when it premiered 25 years ago, and now it is back on Broadway for the first time, produced by Mike Bosner and director Thomas Kail and running for a strictly limited engagement. The play has a storied history, going on to be adapted into a Hollywood film in 2005 starring Anthony Hopkins and Gwyneth Paltrow.

While the play's title and content refer to a mathematical proof, the play's more universal themes touch on father-daughter relationships, sisterhood, and society's capacity to believe in intelligent, autonomous women. Catherine is not believed when she confesses to having fashioned a breakthrough proof. Trying to convince her older sister and one of her father's last students, she must also trust herself as her grasp on reality shifts. A taut, thrilling, and smart drama, Proof became one of the most popularly produced plays in America thanks to its strong roles, small cast, and many accolades.

What to watch for

  • The creative team will include Oscar-winning composer Kris Bowers.
  • Edebiri will appear on Broadway at the same time as her The Bear co-stars, Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who star in Dog Day Afternoon.
