A story reclaimed, a legacy looped: this hip-hop musical plays with the elasticity of time to highlight how the fight for freedom takes many forms across generations. Metro Weekly gave it a five-star review: “Bringing beats, rhymes, and life to an untaught chapter of American history, Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson form a formidable double act.”
Many musicals have tackled moments from history: Hamilton has its own hip-hop score, Suffs looked at women fighting for the right to vote, and Assassins even examined those who attempted to, or did kill, presidents. But now, in Mexodus, audiences may learn about a less-told part of American history: those who looked to escape slavery by not heading north but south, across the Mexican border. Like the aforementioned musicals, this one is not a history lesson, but rather a highly entertaining piece of theatre in which Quijada and Robinson, using live-looping technology and numerous instruments, build up the show's high-energy musical landscape in real time.
What to watch for
- The play won three Helen Hayes Awards, including Outstanding Production of a Musical, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Musical for Brian Quijada, and Outstanding Director of a Musical for David Mendizábal.
- Its world premiere was co-produced by Baltimore Center Stage and Mosaic Theater Company.
- The unique musical has wowed audiences across the country, also playing at Berkley Repertory Theatre before now coming to New York City.
- Mendizábal is also a member of The Movement Theatre Company, known for their popular work What to Send Up When It Goes Down.

This powerful, truth-telling experience includes strong language and references to racism, racial violence, and sexual abuse; all essential to the story and handled with care. Younger audiences are welcome at a parent or guardian's discretion.
