About The Dinosaurs

Set an alert for when The Dinosaurs tickets go on sale to see this Playwrights Horizons world premiere about a group of women who share their stories of recovery every week. The Dinosaurs plays at the Judith O. Rubin Theater for a limited run this winter, and Obie Award winner Les Waters (Blue Cowboy, The Thin Place) directs Jacob Perkins' transcendent new play.

See The Dinosaurs in New York City and get to know a group of women who share their stories of recovery every week at the same time, in the same place. As weeks slip into years and decades spin into eternity, the women keep coming back amidst an ever-shifting, unfamiliar world. A sharply funny, loving ode to how we hold onto and let go of friends, our worries, and our love, The Dinosaurs is a singular and moving new play. "Jacob Perkins' plays feel like spare spells," Culturebot wrote.

More information about The Dinosaurs

Jacob Perkins’ The Dinosaurs taps into the cosmic in the everyday, seen through the dynamics of a women’s recovery group that meets weekly, and perhaps eternally. Les Waters, who directed Lucas Hnath’s The Thin Place at Playwrights Horizons with “thrilling austerity” (The New York Times, Critic’s Pick review), likewise takes an evocatively spare and performance-forward approach to this powerful meditation on healing. Characters confronting feelings of longing and obsolescence unite through overlapping desires, while revealing the diverging ways we express them.

In Culturebot, playwright Agnes Borinsky wrote, "I often find myself blindsided by the worlds he so delicately assembles – listening quietly and then walloped by a flood of tears." Gay City News also said, "Perkins' writing is a fearless and pointed look at the human condition."

Perkins was a winner of the 2020 Biennial Commission from Clubbed Thumb, the inaugural recipient of the DVRF/O’Henry Emerging Playwright Award, and is an alumnus of Ars Nova’s Play Group and Soho Rep.’s Writer/Director Lab.

What to watch for

  • Les Waters is known for his imaginative but spare productions that often play with mystery, spirits, and that which is hard to pin down.
  • In addition to being a playwright, Jacob Perkins is a clinical mental health counselor and researcher.
  • Playwrights Horizons began its 2025/26 season with the smash run of the extended solo piece Nothing Can Take You From the Hand of God.
  • Playwrights Artistic Director Adam Greenfield called this season "a wild mash-up of works on both grand and intimate scales, each one fresh-eyed and curious, urgent and relentlessly human."
