About Jerome

See this haunting, funny, and striking new play by John J. Caswell, Jr. Running at Playwrights Horizons this season, Jerome plays for a limited time only this spring on 42nd Street in the Judith O. Rubin Theater. A sharp and entertaining look at two men, a small town, and a stranger who visits it, this arresting three-hander traces the opening of a heretofore insular gay relationship — in an Arizona ghost town in the early 1990s — to an outsider.

Jerome, a ghost town in the isolated Arizona backcountry, is home to Con and Doane, an aging gay couple who have built a quiet life far from the chaos of cities and other people — until a newcomer arrives, fleeing a damaged past and falling into the men's arms. Set at the height of the AIDS epidemic, this premiere is unexpectedly funny and a delicately wrought story of survival, even in the harshest of deserts.

This was a very emotional and relevant play and not just for the LBGTQ+ community. It’s relevant about live, love, and loss

Centered around a queer couple-turned-throuple in the ghost town of Jerome, Arizona, JEROME wrestles with the universal fear of the end of life, what it means to leave our loved ones behind, and what we keep from those we care the most about. The dialogue was sharp and clever, the story was compelling, and the scenic and lighting were dark and morbid but quite striking. The last scene was a little off in pacing compared to the rest of the show.

Emotionally resonant story with some decent acting!

More information about Jerome

John J. Caswell Jr. examines queerness, and loneliness, from specific angles, as he does in his new play that follows a gay couple opening up their relationship when a stranger comes to town.

Caswell Jr. returns to Playwrights Horizons after his smash hit Wet Brain, "a very funny, pitch-black comedy about addiction and obligation, love and abandonment, and patterns of poisonous behavior lodged so deep they seem encoded," as The New York Times wrote. His new play, Jerome, reunites him with his Wet Brain director, Dustin Wills, who won an Obie Award for staging that inventive play.

Featuring floating actors and a set that was turned sideways, the design and production for that play were highly ambitious: "Wet Brain is the kind of play that forces you to reckon with the singular nature of what theater can do," Vogue wrote. And while Jerome features a smaller cast, audiences can expect new magic.

What to watch for

  • John J. Caswell Jr. is also the writer of Scene Partners (Vineyard Theater) and Man Cave (Page 73).
  • The writer is the recipient of the esteemed Paula Vogel Playwriting Award.
  • Director Dustin Wills won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Direction for Wolf Play.
  • Playwrights Horizons continues its season with Jerome following its highly successful and extended play Nothing Can Take You From the Hand of God.
