About Jerome

Set an alert for when Jerome tickets go on sale on TodayTix to see this haunting, funny, and striking new play by John J. Caswell, Jr. Running at Playwrights Horizons this season, Jerome plays for a limited time only this spring on 42nd Street in the Judith O. Rubin Theater. A sharp and entertaining look at two men, a small town, and a stranger who visits it, this arresting three-hander traces the opening of a heretofore insular gay relationship — in an Arizona ghost town in the early 1990s — to an outsider.

Jerome, a ghost town in the isolated Arizona backcountry, is home to Con and Doane, an aging gay couple who have built a quiet life far from the chaos of cities and other people — until a newcomer arrives, fleeing a damaged past and falling into the men's arms. Set at the height of the AIDS epidemic, this premiere is unexpectedly funny and a delicately wrought story of survival, even in the harshest of deserts.

More information about Jerome

John J. Caswell Jr. examines queerness, and loneliness, from specific angles, as he does in his new play that follows a gay couple opening up their relationship when a stranger comes to town.

Caswell Jr. returns to Playwrights Horizons after his smash hit Wet Brain, "a very funny, pitch-black comedy about addiction and obligation, love and abandonment, and patterns of poisonous behavior lodged so deep they seem encoded," as The New York Times wrote. His new play, Jerome, reunites him with his Wet Brain director, Dustin Wills, who won an Obie Award for staging that inventive play.

Featuring floating actors and a set that was turned sideways, the design and production for that play were highly ambitious: "Wet Brain is the kind of play that forces you to reckon with the singular nature of what theater can do," Vogue wrote. And while Jerome features a smaller cast, audiences can expect new magic.
