See this dark comedy at Playwrights Horizons. Practice plays for a limited run at the Judith O. Rubin Theater on 42nd Street this fall. In this new play, Nazareth Hassan (recently at Vineyard Theatre: Bowl EP) showcases a community slowly, hilariously, and scarily slipping into an authoritarian state.
Experience Practice in New York to see this timely world premiere directed by Keenan Tyler Oliphant (Terce). In Practice off Broadway, meet Asa Leon: the avant-garde auteur of the moment. For their next highly-anticipated performance piece, they assemble a company of actors to live together in an old Brooklyn church and make a play about themselves. Hassan’s painfully hyperreal comedy charts the gradual seduction of power, and what we each sacrifice to belong to a group.
Hassan's last play, Bowl EP, was a New York Times Critic's Pick; now, a new story takes center stage as an ensemble of actors play competing friends all vying for the spotlight.
2hr 30min. Incl. intermission.

Looking at how authority unfolds, playwright Nazareth Hassan questioned his own power as a writer, noting in a statement, “What’s the very worst thing I could do with this skill set?” The character of Asa Leon soon leapt to Hassan, morphing into a mashup of countless teachers and directors they’d worked with.
Artistic Director Adam Greenfield added, “Every once in a while in my career, I come across a writer whose work crawls into my brain and starts to make my head spin. Whose writing is such an immediate sucker punch that I’ll remember the quality of light in the room I was sitting in while reading. Over the last few years, all of Nazareth’s plays have given me that, and Practice most of all."
Finally, the director Keenan Tyler Oliphant shared, “I’ve been very lucky to read a lot of Nazareth’s work, and there’s an almost ancient Grecian epicness to it and the way they use poetry."
A world premiere, Practice is a deviously funny and disquieting look at a community’s slip toward despotism.
