In the shadows of World War II, Marcel on the Train reveals the man behind the invisible mask: Marcel Marceau, one of the world’s most famous mimes, lived from 1923 to 2007. Despite his theatrical life, his story may not be known to many audiences. Now, superstar Ethan Slater creates this inventive new play that shows us how, sometimes, the loudest resistance begins in the most quiet places.
Famous for his life as a mime, Marceau was also a force working to help Jewish children in the 1940s. The story became deeply personal: in 1944, his father was captured by the Gestapo and deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he was killed. His mother survived, and Marceau saw it as his life's work, off the stage, to resist fascism.
Classic Stage Company is known for reviving beloved hits, but they also produce vital new works, and this premiere is one not to miss.
