About The Receptionist

See Adam Bock's acclaimed play revived for the first time in New York in over a decade. Coming to Second Stage Theater, The Receptionist plays for a limited time only starting this spring. Obie Award winner Adam Bock's dark comedy follows a receptionist who is just doing her job, until the orders get darker, weirder, and all the more telling of our times.

The Receptionist off Broadway is a timely story about the ease and complicity of evil, funneled through the relatability of corporate America. Performances begin April 15, 2026 with an opening set for May 7. In 2008, the play was up for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play from Outer Critics Circle Awards; now, it returns to New York City in a fresh production. Don't miss Adam Bock’s “poisoned Post-it note of a play” (The New York Times).

More information about The Receptionist

In The Receptionist, it is business as usual at the Northeast Office, where the cheery and dutiful receptionist answers the phone, brews the coffee, and gossips with co-workers. However, an unexpected visitor from the Central Office soon walks through the door, and business becomes anything but usual. The Receptionist is a dark comedy about bureaucracy, order, and complicity, and its contemporary, biting humor reveals a chilling relevance today.

Theatermania called the play a "chilling contemporary allegory." It goes on to say that "Adam Bock is thinking about the extent to which moral responsibility should be shared by those far removed from the so-called deciders. Can the littlest cog in the societal wheel claim immunity? He makes his uncompromising statement in a piece that falls somewhere between Shirley Jackson’s short story The Lottery and a Twilight Zone episode."

Bock is known for his idiosyncratic characters and wry writing that has been recognized for decade across American theatres.
