More information about This World of Tomorrow
After the collision of technology and desire, nostalgia and history, what life will Bert choose as his own?
That's the central question at the heart of Tom Hanks and James Glossman's gorgeous and moving new play. This World of Tomorrow is an epic but intimate love story that, while set in the future, remains timeless. Playing at The Shed's Griffin Theater starting this October, This World of Tomorrow is a theatrical and sweeping story of a scientist from the future longing to return to the past to chart his present day.
"I'm excited to collaborate with the remarkable Tom Hanks on his and James Glossman's new play at The Shed this fall," said director Kenny Leon in a statement. "It will be a joy to experience Tom leading the cast on stage in this time-traveling adventure of the limitless power of love and the distance one is willing to go for it."
What to watch for
- Kenny Leon is an acclaimed stage director but also earned fame for his TV work: he is a three-time Emmy Award nominee, including for Hairspray Live!.
- In a statement, Tom Hanks said, "To explore the themes of love and yearning, and the struggles of today as we carry with us the eternal memories of the past, in such a place as The Shed, strikes me as a one-of-a-kind experience not unlike the World’s Fair of 1939."
- This new play was a special commission directly from The Shed: the Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Commissioning Fund and the Shed Commissioners funded its creation.
- Known for his screen work, Hanks also made his Broadway debut in 2013's Lucky Guy, earning a Tony Award for his performance.
