More information about Viola's Room

With Sleep No More, Punchdrunk reinvented immersive theatre, creating a multi-floor experience at the McKittrick Hotel for audiences to explore. Now, they have crafted a new, singular experience, this one where you feel your way through a labyrinthine world as an unseen narrator, Helena Bonham Carter, recounts a story of lost innocence and unleashed obsession. This production distills two decades of Punchdrunk's immersive practice into an intimate sensory adventure.

Experienced barefoot and while wearing headphones, Viola’s Room promises to infuse the dreams of anyone who dares to follow the light. In a five-star review, The Daily Telegraph wrote that “Helena Bonham Carter leads you into a moonlit world you won’t want to leave.” With a sumptuous design, this new production is written by Daisy Johnson, who was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and comes to The Shed, an awe-inspiring venue unto itself, that hosts the show in its Level 4 Gallery.

What to watch for

The official headphone partner of Viola’s Room is Bowers & Wilkins. This special experience lasts for just about one hour. Haze, flashing lights, and loud recorded sound are used in Viola’s Room. The audience will be barefoot across a variety of different floor surfaces. Viola’s Room features moments of total darkness, as well as narrow spaces, some of which require audiences to crouch, crawl, or bend over to pass through.
