Climb the corporate ladder with Chinese Republicans in New York. In the scathing new comedy, three high-powered businesswomen meet for lunch every month to discuss their latest career triumphs, as they’ve done for decades. But that all changes when Katie, a young newcomer, joins the workforce. Worse than their cashflow and workflow, Katie will disrupt the women's actual life flow. See Chinese Republicans off Broadway this winter at Roundabout Theatre Company.

More information about Chinese Republicans

Alex Lin's play is more than just a critique of capitalism: it's a uproarious satire about She-E-Os and the lies we tell ourselves to keep our friends, keep our money, and keep our power. Shifting between sharp-tongued humor and the harsh realities of modern economic structures, this world premiere production also explores themes of assimilation, intergenerational conflict, and gender politics in the workplace — all with unflinching wit, but also deep empathy.

A truly American story, Chinese Republicans is a new play from a thrilling new American voice. Lin is a writer to watch; she's had work developed at major theatres including Roundabout, Second Stage, MTC, and the O'Neill, and she is matched well with an established director, Chay Yew, whose New York credits include the Public Theater, Playwrights Horizons, New York Theatre Workshop, and Signature Theatre. Together, they have created a searing look at how far we'll go to hold onto power, and how friends and business don't always mix.

What to watch for

  • At Roundabout, beginning summer 2025, the Todd Haimes Theatre will undergo major renovations including restoration of the theatre’s historic interior, a gut renovation of all restrooms, elevator modernization, and seating replacement.
  • While powerful businessmen have long been seen in plays like Glengarry Glen Ross, Alex Lin's play is a rare one in sharing four businesswomen's perspectives.
  • Roundabout produces new plays seen off Broadway, like this one, and also on Broadway, as with Oedipus as part of its 2025-26 season.
  • As an actor, Alex Lin has also been in shows at New York Theatre Workshop, Actors Theatre of Louisville, New Victory, and Ma-Yi.
