It’s not hard to sit at a coffee shop, go out to dinner, or walk through a park and see a couple on a first date, meeting IRL for the first time. So in Strategic Love Play, it seems perfectly normal that the two unnamed characters, a man and a woman, should have a first date IRL after matching online. They liked what they saw, and now here they are.
But: the date does not go as planned. The conversation is rough, and the flirting is weird — and yet, they can’t leave their seats. Maybe something else is going on? A twisty look at our contemporary dating scene, Strategic Love Play is an inventive new work about being turned on online, and off offline. A hilarious look at modern forms of connection, the different ways attraction functions, and the impossibility of getting out of a sticky situation, this play is for anyone who’s ever sworn off the dating apps.
What to watch for
- Critics raved about the UK premiere of this new play, calling it “as gripping as a friend’s rapid-fire texts from a disastrous first date” (The Evening Standard).
- TV talent comes to the stage in this new play: the playwright wrote for the Emmy-winning series Succession, and actors Michael Zegen and Heléne Yorke are frequent faces on prestige dramas and comedies, including The Penguin, Girls, Masters of Sex, and 30 Rock.
- Yorke is no stranger to the stage: she’s been on Broadway in Grease, Bullets Over Broadway, and American Psycho.
- Zegen is also more known for his TV work but he has been on Broadway in Trouble in Mind and A View from the Bridge and off Broadway in Bad Jews.
