More information about Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil

Based on the Pulitzer finalist non-fiction book by John Berendt which also inspired a 1997 film, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil premiered at Chicago's Goodman Theatre last year and is eyeing a Broadway bow. Casting, venue, and dates will be announced at a later date.

The musical is set in Savannah, Georgia. Southern charm abounds, but behind the polite smiles are secrets aplenty. When Jim Williams, a wealthy antiques dealer, is accused of murder, a sensational trial ensues, unearthing hidden truths and exposing the fine line between good and evil, leading Lady Chablis and other Savannahians to change their city forever.

Revolving around a major trial, audiences can expect plenty of intrigue, mystery, and colorful characters. The musical is based on a real 1981 killing that sparked a nationwide dialogue and frenzy. “I loved the music, I loved the performances, and I loved the message,” Splash Magazine said of the Chicago production, now coming to Broadway.

What to watch for

  • The original book’s author loved the musical adaptation. John Berendt was “captivated by Jason Robert Brown's imaginative score and Taylor Mac's ingenious rendering of the (admittedly) complicated 388-page book.”
  • Reviews of the Goodman production were glowing: “everyone is at the top of their game,” the Chicago Reader said and WGN gave it the “highest of recommendations.”
  • This is not Jason Robert Brown’s first time addressing the complexity of life in the South: Parade put him on the map and was another musical that revolved around a trial.
  • Taylor Mac makes an auspicious Broadway debut as a musical writer, but the Pulitzer finalist has been on Broadway before with the comedy Gary, starring Nathan Lane.
