About Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center: Elgar's Quintet
Building on the earlier traditions of the piano quintet, Elgar’s A-minor Quintet was composed later in his career, during a time of reflection just after World War I. Likewise, Brahms’s Third Violin Sonata has a sense of nostalgia, written towards the end of his compositional career. Beethoven’s fifth and final cello sonata is arguably his first “late-period” work.
• Ludwig van Beethoven - Sonata in D major for Cello and Piano, Op. 102, No. 2 (1815)
• Johannes Brahms - Sonata No. 3 in D minor for Violin and Piano, Op. 108 (1886–88)
• Edward Elgar - Quintet in A minor for Piano, Two Violins, Viola, and Cello, Op. 84 (1918–19)
Alessio Bax, Michael Stephen Brown, piano; Benjamin Beilman, Richard Lin, violin; Milena Pájaro-van de Stadt, viola; Paul Watkins, cello
