Emursive knows that drawing audiences in means not revealing all the secrets at once, and their newest play is similarly shrouded in some mystery. It's all part of the plan: audiences are invited to explore the secrets and intrigue of this storied institution, Life and Trust, which is as much a functioning bank headquarters as it is a ritzy playground to explore.
But here’s what you can expect: actors with exciting plots to follow, so many rooms you’ll hardly be able to see them all, and Easter eggs hidden throughout the experience. All the while, stand in awe of the imperious J. G. Conwell, a complicated man driven by greed, ambition, and a distinctly American spirit of ruthless business expansion. Was he a titan or a villain? You’ll get to decide, but either way, it’ll be hard not to marvel at all he has created. Life and Trust offers a one-of–a-kind experience, perfect for adventurous theatergoers and those craving something different and very alive.
What to watch for
- As with Sleep No More, this new show is wonderful for audiences from all over the world: performed without a verbal script and instead leading with movement, costumes, and awesome sets, audiences don’t have to speak English to be amazed by this show.
- There’s much to see, but also taste — Conwell Coffee Hall features baristas and mixologists to serve up drinks before, during, and after the show.
- While much of New York theater happens around Midtown, Emursive takes audiences to other corners of Manhattan; Sleep No More is at the McKittrick Hotel in Chelsea, and in Life and Trust audiences can explore a part of the city known more for its businesses than its theaters, the Financial District, which is also what makes this show so unique.
- A fixation on the hyperwealthy is becoming increasingly common in the stories we consume, from The Lehmon Trilogy on stage to Succession on TV.
