About Philadelphia, Here I Come!

Set in 1962, this classic bittersweet comedy revolves around the young Gar O’Donnell on the eve of his departure from Ireland to America. Gar’s heartache from losing his girlfriend to a successful businessman propels him to accept an invitation to go and live with an aunt in Philadelphia. Despite the wild fantasies of what life in America might hold, and his yearning to escape the tedium of small town Ballybeg, a kind word from his taciturn father could change his mind.

Philadelphia, Here I Come! was Friel’s first major success, premiering in 1964 at the Gaiety Theatre Dublin, and transferring to Broadway two years later.

See it if Set in the rebellious 60s,the play mirrors a new Irish identity thru a few dichotomies:father vs son, guilt vs adventure, private vs public*

Don’t see it if You don't like a charming ethnic accent.

Absorbing, Slow, Funny, Intelligent, Great acting

See it if you like quiet family tension-here it is between father and son who have communication problems set shortly before the son is depart.

Don’t see it if you need a lot of action - this all takes place in a stable set with a lot of talk requiring you to listen attentively.

Exquisite writing, Terrific acting, Heartbreaking

See it if you're in for a gem of play that's intelligent, rich, funny, beautifully directed, and performed by a stellar cast with standout AJ Shively.

Don’t see it if you're not interested in family dramas dealing with troubled relationships & challenges of moving on, or looking for a more fast-paced show.

Great writing, Moving, Great acting, Absorbing

See it if you want to have an intimate look at a family when changes are occurring. Great concept of Public & Private Gar. Friel's dialogue is so true

Don’t see it if you have trouble with accents or need a lot of action. Ciaran O'Reilly as actor/director is superb in both roles.
