More information about Dungeons & Dragons: The Twenty-Sided Tavern

Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop fantasy game in which players take on roles as mythical creatures to overcome obstacles. First published in 1974, the game now celebrates its 50th anniversary following many new editions and countless games played. Unlike board games, Dungeons & Dragons requires a more fluid rule book, no physical pieces, and a greater imagination. A Dungeon Master, or DM, dictates the map and rules of the fantasy world, setting goals for the players to achieve. Through special powers unlocked with a 20-sided die, players rely on chance to dictate how the game and its missions will unfold.

In Dungeons & Dragons: The Twenty-Sided Tavern, fans of the game and newcomers alike come together to play out a larger-scale version of the game, making choices on their phones to see whether the adventure will be a success or dissolve into chaos. Make your move!

What to watch for

  • No need to download anything in advance, but make sure your phone is fully charged: audiences will play on Gamiotics to solve puzzles and make moves.
  • Audience participation is not required, but in the spirit of a choose-your-own-adventure game, some players will be invited to participate in the onstage mission. For those staying in the audience, cheer on your fellow players and help them succeed by making strategic decisions on Gamiotics.
  • For D&D superfans, come in costume! Apparel shouldn’t obstruct anyone’s view or be distracting, but fantasy dress, cosplay, and anything in between are encouraged. But be sure to leave the weaponry (impressive as it may be) at home.
  • This is a tavern, after all, so drinks will be available at lobby bars and for those on stage as part of the game. There are several moments in the show where players drink in celebration (and in shame), so feel free to play along! The performers are professionals, though, so leave the chugging to them.
  • While there have surely been other productions that incorporate or mention D&D, The Twenty-Sided Tavern is the first stage show officially licensed by Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, the game’s producers.
