About The White Chip

The White Chip is a New York Times Critic's Pick! Sean Daniels's riveting comedy (inspired by his own life) about love, loss, and the road to addiction recovery is back in New York after a celebrated run in 2019. Get The White Chip tickets on TodayTix before it's too late!

Sheryl Kaller, the Tony-nominated original director of the show’s first Off-Broadway run, returns for this new production of the play, which The New York Times praised for its “delicate equilibrium between laugh-out-loud comedy and gasp-inducing, self-inflicted tragedy.”

Sometimes you just have to laugh when life gets tough… right? Steven is a successful theatre director on top of the world who’s married, has good friends, and is so close to snagging his dream job leading one of the top theatres in America. The only problem? His alcoholism is spinning out of control.

Follow his harrowing journey from first sip to first kiss, from critical choice to critical care, and all the way down to the deepest depths of rock bottom, where he finds the strength to forge his own path toward sobriety. The White Chip is a play that’s darkly funny, surprisingly shocking, and above all, earnest. Get tickets to The White Chip off Broadway now.

More information about The White Chip

Joe Tapper, last seen on Broadway in You Can't Take It With You, reprises his leading role as Steven from the 2019 production. Director Sheryl Kaller is also no stranger to Broadway, having directed two Broadway productions – Mothers and Sons and Next Fall, for which she earned a Tony nomination.

Playwright Sean Daniels based the main character on his own struggles with alcoholism. Steven, amid his flourishing career, frequently gets day drunk on vodka that he mixes into bottles of soda. He still succeeds at his job at first, but Steven’s life soon deteriorates. When his father is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Steven uses the shock as a further excuse to drink and distance himself from his parents. The play explores how a man far gone can still find a way out against all odds.

What to watch for

  • The play’s name comes from the Alcoholics Anonymous sobriety-chip system. The white chip is given to anyone new or returning to A.A. who wants to give sobriety a chance for 24 hours. It is symbolic of the first step towards recovery.
  • John Larroquette, Hank Azaria, and Sweeney Todd star Annaleigh Ashford are among the many producers of The White Chip in New York.
  • Talk about showmance! Tapper and Ashford both starred together in Broadway’s You Can't Take It With You and have been married since 2013.
  • Daniels leads the Recovery Project, a producer of The White Chip, at Florida Studio Theatre. The initiative seeks to remove the stigma of addiction and recovery through new play development, theatre education programs, and community outreach.
